  • Secluded riverside bush site in the Western Cape mountains
  • Kammanassie Reserve 15 mins; Knysna Forest and Elephant Park 1.5 hour
  • 40 minutes to shops and pubs in Uniondale
Get in touch with your wild side on this Western Cape wilderness site. M'kama sits in a marvellous patch of South African mountain country, between the Kammanassie Nature Reserve and the misty montane forest slopes leading down to the Indian Ocean at Knysna. There are two ways to stay here, both back to basics. Pitch up wherever you like at the base site, 200 m away from the Keurbooms river. No electric here, but there's hot showers and toilets. If you've got a hardier side, and a 4x4 vehicle then do it pioneer fashion, staying wherever you like in the surrounding 21 kilometres of M'kama's mountain paths and passes. It's a fine area to explore on foot; in some places hikers can meet up with the wagon trails left by botanist-explorer William John Burchell when he came here in 1782. The landscape hasn't changed that much. The Kneurbooms river is an obvious draw as well for cooling dips and canoeing kicks. You can follow it right down to the coast. Uniondale (45 minutes' drive) is your closest stop for shopping and stocking up. It's also got pubs and eats if you fancy a change from campfire cuisine.

Local attractions

Kammanassie Nature Reserve (15 minutes) gets its name from the Khoisan word meaning 'mountain of water'. That sums it up well; 50,000 acres of hills laced with streams and rivers, home to a rare band of Cape mountain zebras, and visited overhead by black eagles. Drive 15 minutes in the other direction and you reach Prince Alfred's Pass, a much loved local lookout spot with views right down to the ocean. If you continue on the road, you'll enter the fabulous Knysna Forests (one hour, 15 minutes), a hilly and densely covered landscape where you might meet the likes of leopards, baboons and honey badgers. Sadly only three elephants are thought to roam freely through this montane forest, but the Knysna Elephant Park (an hour from the site) is rebuilding the population with rescued and orphaned youngsters from all across Africa. Carry on down to Knysna (one hour, 20 minutes) for beaches, boat rides and fishing trips. Surfers head round to Buffalo Bay, 10 kilometres out of Knysna town, while those in search of solitude can't do better than Noetzie (also 10 kilometres), a matchless strip of empty white sands bordered by a nature reserve. Watch the baboons don't nick your picnic.
