You'll most certainly be in the land of citrus when you arrive at the Western Cape's Citrus Creek – and exploring this colourful countryside by canter is a cinch. Less than two hours from Cape Town, Citrus Creek is less than a kilometre from the Olifants river valley town of Citrusdal, in an agricultural region at the base of the Cederberg mountains. This is cracking territory to delve into any way you please, but a hugely recommended option is via a guided hack on the site's own friendly horses, on trails leading from the Citrus Creek grounds. If this isn't for you, hiking trips are available here, or you could set intrepidly off under your own steam on a birdwatching or nature spotting foray into the surrounding mountains. Citrus Creek is a peaceful and scenic spot, with a river running in front (please note this is sometimes dry in summer). There's plenty of space for idling, around the pool or in the communal room with pool tables and table tennis – or at the braai area while someone else cooks up dins. And if the kids are feeling energetic after your local hikes and hacks? A jungle gym and play area awaits. Amenities include well-kept toilets and showers, wood sales, electrical points for charging, and a scullery for washing up. Shops and restaurants are within walking distance.

Local attractions

Citrus Creek is in a handy – and handsome – spot to explore the spectacular surrounds of the Cederbergs, especially during the flower season in August and September. There's loads to do in these parts, from 4x4 tours around Citrusdal's mountain farms or ziplining over the valley, to fishing in the Olifants river and hiking in the trails around town and into the mountains. Somewhat less actively, book a rock art tour into the mountains around Citrusdal, to see their many sites of ancient San Rock paintings. For day trips, rock artists can take the Sevilla rock art trail near Clanwilliam, about 50 minutes' drive away, or mosey around the stunning Stadsaal caves (an hour and a half's drive) and other sites in the Cederberg Wilderness Area. A nine-hole golf course is on the banks of the river next to the resort.
