  • Stay on a small game farm, meet the animals of the Bushveld

  • Top spot for stargazing and spectacular sunsets
In the Zulu language, Khululeka means ‘become free’, ‘feel at ease’ and ‘relax’… At Khululeka Bushveld Guest Farm, a small game farm 45 minutes’ drive from the city of Rustenburg in the North West region of South Africa, see if you can live up to the definition. The owners have made every effort to make relaxation easy at Khululeka: the site is secluded and close to the Bushveld, with mountains looming nearby, and there’s nothing to interrupt your peace other than the calls of the wild. Drop in on the springbok, warthogs, impalas and small antelope on site to soak up the peace of the animals, or take a dip in the pool and let your troubles float away. If you’re still feeling wound tight, on-site pampering can be arranged, or you can make your way to Kedar Country Spa or Hunters Rest Spa near Rustenburg. Take your relaxation into the outside world with a peaceful boating trip at Koster Dam, a drive around the stunning Kgaswane Mountain Reserve or a walk in the Bushveld. What’s relaxation without some grub to make your stomach as happy as the rest of you? Khululeka is self-catering so grab some supplies from the small town of Swartruggens, 20 minutes away, and cook them up in the kitchen or over a barbecue. If you want someone else to do the cooking, there are a few restaurants in Swartruggens where you can pull a seat up to the table.

Local attractions

Want your hols to be all about a return to nature? You’ll be well-placed at Khululeka Bushveld Guest Farm: meet the lions, tigers and jaguars (oh my!) at Akwaaba Predator Park, half an hour’s drive from the site, or go further afield for scenic Kgaswane Mountain Reserve’s self-drive routes. The Magalies Canopy Tour is just under an hour away, as is Pilansberg Nature Reserve, where you can go on safari, take a game drive or soar into the sky on a hot air balloon ride. If you’re feeling more of an urban vibe, you can make your way to Rustenburg, 40 minutes from Khululeka, for a poke around the shops and museums, or for tours and tastings at Brauhaus am Damm, where they follow a strict Bavarian 16th-century brewing law. Feeling lucky and want to (try) end the trip on a profit? Head to Sun City Resort where you can dance with Lady Luck at the casino – or, if the cards don’t fall in your favour, you can always drown your sorrows (not literally, please) at the Valley of the Waves waterpark.
