  • Quiet off-grid rural cabin just outside the village of Bende Mutale
  • A 10-minute drive from the Pafuri Gate into Kruger National Park
  • Covered deck area with braai overlooking the Mutale river
Taking the crew to Kruger? Get a head start on those early-morning game drives by making for Mutale Drift Pafuri Gate, on the outskirts of the Venda village of Bende Mutale and a mere couple of kilometres from the gateway to the famed wildlife reserve. Come armed with provisions, kit and coolbox, for this is a proper rural off-grid place with no electricity, cellphone reception or fridge (there’s also no wifi, so you'll need to put the gadgets aside). Handily, however, there’s plenty of natural entertainment in the form of passing wildlife: best viewed by grabbing a beer from your cool box and heading out to your private covered deck area, which has a fine outlook over the Mutale river. You’d also do well to pack plenty of fodder for the barbecue – that deck also houses a cooking area, with an open pit fire for stoking up a braai as the sun goes down. Loaf around on deck a little longer to see the sky light up with a starry display (no light pollution = one of the perks of being far from urban life). Or get set for the game-viewing day ahead by tucking in for an early night: the cabin’s been kitted out with comfy beds to sleep four, plus an ensuite bathroom and solar lighting to help you find your way around during the hours of darkness.

Local attractions

Well, it’s all about the star attraction, isn’t it? Kruger National Park is a name known all over the world for its great game viewing, and with good reason: its whopping 19,000 square kilometres make it one of Africa’s biggest game reserves, home to the big five (that’s your elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos and rhinos) as well as swathes of smaller beasties. Getting out to see the wild ones is a cinch from here, for the park's Pafuri Gate is just a 10-minute drive away. Take a day or few in this northern section of the park and you may well spot leopards, baboons and bush pigs among the baobab trees; turn your sights upwards for possible glimpses of rare birds including Pel's fishing-owl and Ayres's hawk-eagle. Fancy a change of scenery? Take a wander around the gorgeous Mutale Falls (10 minutes’ drive from camp), or set forth to see the mighty Sagole Baobab, an hour away. It’s said to be the biggest baobab in all of South Africa (and yep, it’s pretty hefty – grab 20 or so pals and you might just be able to form a link around the trunk).
