  • Stunning family resort located in a slice of Drakensberg paradise
  • Mountain bike hire and trails on site for running and cycling
  • Spectacular mountain views, large open spaces and park-like grounds
They say time seems to pass more slowly when you’re busy… If that’s true, then a stay at Mountain Splendour Eco-Resort, a resort on a working farm half an hour’s drive from Winterton in the spectacularly scenic Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal, is going to feel like it’s lasting forever – in the best way possible. To explore Drakensberg, take a Scootour or canopy tour, clamber into the saddle for horse trails, ask the team to help you organise hikes into the high berg, or hire a hot air balloon to go soaring over this stunning part of South Africa. Closer to base camp, follow the trails around Mountain Splendour or hire a bike to zip around the purpose-built mountain bike routes that ring the site. Once you’ve had your fill of wanderings, there’s tons on site to keep you busy and active: bring the kids tree climbing, to the playground or to the animal farm, have a couple of games of tennis, volleyball, cricket, rounders or football, release your inner chess master on the outdoor set, go tubing in the nearby river, or take a dip in the on-site pool. This will surely work up an appetite, so fire up the braai, make your way to the on-site restaurant, or venture out to grab a table at one of the nearby restaurants. Make sure too to be around for the 10am tea and scones – scones topped with cream from Mary the Moo (the site’s cow), who you can help to milk every morning.

Local attractions

Start your stay by wringing every drop of activity out of the area around Mountain Splendour Eco-Resort: try whitewater rafting, quad biking and abseiling at Four Rivers Rafting, ziplining and paintball at Champagne Castle Adventure Centre and, during term time, catch a Wednesday afternoon concert at the Drakensberg Boys Choir School, all within 10 minutes’ drive. There’s so much to do in the area that you’d be forgiven for not bothering to go any further afield, but it’s certainly worth the jaunt, especially if you’re a fan of the vino or craft brews: Drakensberg Brewery is five minutes down the road, Cathedral Peak Wine Estate is half an hour from the site, and there are tons more of both around an hour away. Want to get out in nature while you’re here? Visit the bees in their glass hives at Scrumpy Jack’s, the birds of prey at Falcon Ridge and the reptiles at Dragon Rock, then forge ahead to Spioenkop Nature Reserve, 30 minutes away (for boating, fishing and horseback game viewing – watch out for rhinos, giraffes and elands), or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of uKhahlamba-Drakensberg National Park, 10 minutes from Mountain Splendour.
