  • Family-friendly site in a small, quiet valley of central Portugal
  • A 30-minute drive to Serra da Estrela Natural Park
  • On-site Finnish sauna for guests’ use during winter months
Escape your hectic life with a retreat at Quinta do Retiro, a nine-hectare site in a small quiet valley, 15 minutes’ drive from the town of Oliveira do Hospital in the Coimbra region of central Portugal. Quinta do Retiro is a top spot for active getaways: head to the Mondego or Alva river, each 20 minutes’ drive from the site, for kayaking, canoeing and swimming, or hike, bike or climb the mountains, cliffs and valleys of Serra da Estrela Natural Park, 30 minutes away, keeping an eye out for wolves, boars and golden eagles. Back on site, there’s plenty to keep you diverted: explore the terraced landscape of fruit trees, olive trees and grape vines, wander down to the small river that cuts through the small private valley, have a dip in the ecological swimming pool, or let the kids bounce all their energy away at the playground. If you’re staying during winter, take your relaxation to the next level and spend a few hours in the Casa Mimosa Finnish sauna before taking a cold plunge into the pool. Once a week, sit down with the rest of the guests for a ‘slow meal’ made with local produce – for the rest of the week, you’re fending for yourself in one of the many nearby restaurants. If you’re still hungry, stock up on snacks and other essentials at the shops in Oliveira do Hospital.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The owners, very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Great spacious pitches, get to choose. Kids liked the trampoline and play area. Big bathrooms and showers and even a washing machine. Loved the option of yummy bread rolls left on your peg in the morning and only 20 cent each!

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Very basic but had all facilities you would need. Washroom had toilets, showers, washing machine, fridge freezer and sinks for general washing up was cleaned regularly and because it was in a wooded area it was really quiet. Site also had a well maintained kids play area and biological pool area.

Disliked: Site had WI Fi but it was very intermittent

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Liked the warm welcome & relaxed atmosphere. On arrival was shown available pitches and choice was ours. No set size to a pitch just use the space you need. Shower block was fabulous, the facilities were 1st class, each was a wet room with sinks and plenty of room. Spent three nights here and never had to queue. Water always hot. Used the washing machine and the bread delivery service both of which were paid for at the end of our stay. Description was fair. It is remote, so you will have to stock up on supplies or venture out. The local roads are good and quiet. Just under 15 minutes to the nearest big town with a choice of supermarkets. We ventured out and saw some 'real' Portugal, down little lanes and through unspoilt villages.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch (no pets)

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Location very quiet and peaceful with beautiful scenery and not far to travel for food supplies. There are also several restaurants close by that have varied menus and are not over expensive. The roads in the area are very quiet so ideal if you want to get out and about on a bike. The campsite is well set out and spacious and you do not feel like you are being shoe horned into the nearest pitch like some campsites offer. The facilities are very clean and are well looked after. There is a lovely swimming pool with a natural filter to cool down in on hot days. The hosts Jurrie and Marga were very welcoming friendly and personable. We stayed for 7 nights and enjoyed it very much and would definitely recommend it. We will definitely stay here again when we revisit Portugal.

Local attractions

While you’re in this part of the country, a trip to the city of Coimbra, an hour’s drive from Quinta do Retiro, is a must. The former Portuguese capital is full of museums, galleries, monasteries and cathedrals and a lengthy exploration of its streets is warranted. If you can only do one thing in Coimbra though, make sure to visit the stunning Baroque library, Biblioteca Joanina, at the university – it’s like something out of a fairytale. Head to the Museu Monográfico de Conímbriga, just over an hour from the site, to learn about the Romans’ history in Portugal through mosaics, sculptures and everyday objects, and be sure to traipse through the grounds to see the Roman ruins… If the kids are bored of museums and libraries, entertain them at Parque Biologico Serra Lousã, a wildlife park and petting zoo an hour’s drive from the site, where they can see bears and reptiles, follow the maze of fruit trees and join in at feeding time. To get a proper feel for Portuguese life, take a trip to the scenic hillside villages of Piódão and Talasnal, or explore the markets of the Tábua and Arganil regions to stock up on Portuguese delicacies and pick up some souvenirs from among the wares of local craftspeople.
