  • The world's northernmost site on the scenic island of Spitsbergen
  • An electric fence for safety; take trips to surrounding settlements
  • Spectacular views over a bird-filled fjord, often visited by reindeer
There’s oft much talk about sleeping peacefully under the starry night sky, but ever wondered what it’s like to snooze under the midnight sun instead? Well as this is the world’s northernmost site (in the world’s northernmost town), between early spring and autumn the sun never sets... So if in need of a top up of vitamin D, make tracks for a stay at Longyearbyen Camping. The friendly site team will happily help sort excursions and find good hiking trails from the site; it’s worth noting that all visitors to Svalbard are required by law to carry a rifle when leaving any settlement to go out into the wilderness, for more than 3,000 polar bears inhabit the isle’s icy lands. Local tour operators in Longyearbyen organise all sorts of adventurous excursions, from boat trips and dog sledding adventures to snowmobiling and quad bike tours; also generously, visitors can borrow bikes at no charge from the tourist information office. With views over a bird-filled fjord towards mountains in the middle distance, this spectacular site’s guests come here for a peaceful and highly scenic stay among Arctic nature, as it's oft visited by the wild likes of curious reindeer, leucistic barnacle geese and heaps of other feathered migratory critters. In the summer here, temperatures average between two and and 15 degrees centigrade, so be sure to pack up your long johns and other thermal garb – aside from that fear not, for a camping stove shall not be required: stays are made most cosy, as at your disposal is a service complex with guest amenities like a heated bathroom and a fully equipped communal kitchen.

Rental tent

Liked: a great place for travelers, open-minded people who like nature - upon arrival you are immediately there, upon departure - you check in your luggage and return to the campsite for coffee, plenty of space in the tent, clean, warm and well-equipped kitchen, helpful staff, adequate number of bathrooms, close you can swim, possibly a microwave would be useful.

Non-electric earth tent pitch

Liked: Un ambiente caldo e accogliente dove puoi apprezzare la vicinanza alla natura al 100 %

Disliked: Purtroppo stare sopra al permafrost vuol dire che fa un po’ freddino.

From the manager: Hi Silvia, We know it can be cold in the Arctic, specially if you come from a warm country. But good to read that you liked your stay with us. Thanks for the high score and welcome back another time.

Rental tent

From the manager: Thanks for your review. Of course we hoped to get a higher rate, but it is good to read that you like to come back. To work on further improvements, I like to know what you mean with the happening in 2015. The only happening at the campsite was that we were open for the solar eclipse. When you refer to the bear in 2020, this was the only time a bear visited the campsite in 42 years. The electric fence system is a proven system against bears during camping in the wild since 2009. Welcome back anaother time.

Local attractions

It’s a 45-minute walk into Longyearbyen, where you can borrow bikes free of charge from the local tourist office, plus you’re handily placed for day trips to Bjørndalen for scenic views over the Isfjord coast. You can join spectacular hiking routes right on site, but be aware that all who leave any sort of settlement are required by law to carry a rifle, for more than 3,000 polar bears roam the glacial lands of Svalbard. Mountaineering, dogsledding on wheels and boat trips to nearby settlements are among the Arctic outdoorsy options available during summer around here. Due to the remoteness of this isle’s icy cool expanse, it’s necessary for most excursions to be led by a local tour operator, which you can ask the friendly Longyearbyen folk a about.
