  • Family-friendly and car-free site in the green countryside of Utrecht
  • Within a 30-minute drive of Utrecht city and 45 of Amsterdam
  • Farm animals and tours, play area, sandpit and library
There is, but of course, some splendid cycling around most parts of the Netherlands. So how handy then that Boerencamping Hazenveld is niftily set up for biking for all sizes – guests can (but of course) hire not just standard cycles on site, but kids' bikes for smaller cyclists, and child seats for the even teenier. And where to pedal off to? Boerencamping Hazenveld is in the green countryside of Utrecht, close to the bike rides and walking of the Parkbos De Haar estate and gardens, and surrounded by paths for cycling and strolling. The lakes of Great Vinkeveen and Loosdrecht are about 15 kilometres north for strong-legged sorts seeking a proper bike ride; Utrecht is 16 kilometres away, and you could be hardy indeed and pedal along to Amsterdam 34 or so kilometres from the site. (No to this last? Get there in 45 minutes by car or about an hour and a half by public transport.) Hazenveld is firmly kid-friendly (and safely car free), with farm animals to meet, cows to feed and farmer Piet on hand to answer questions on the site critters from curious juniors. A play area, sandpit and playing field are also around for offspring amusement, as is a flatscreen TV and DVD player for bigger folk, and a library with books and free newspapers for those of a more contemplative persuasion. The site also has a bread service, wifi, tourist information and a pétanque court. Local town Kockengen is five minutes' drive away.

Local attractions

You'll be able to see the spectacular sight of medieval De Haar Castle from Boerencamping Hazenveld (all the better for imaginative musings of quests, adventure and knighthoods). Built in the 14th century and restored in the 19th, this handsome building is now used as a setting for fairs and festivals including the Elf Fantasy Fair every April, the biggest fantasy fair in Europe (all the better for imaginative musings of quests, adventure and knighthood...). Guided tours, kids' events and tennis courts are also available. More kid-friendly options are at Utrecht, where there's a museum dedicated to Miffy author Dick Bruna and a railway museum for mini trainspotters. Also make time for – an absolute must, says the Boerencamping Hazenveld team – Museum Speelklok, with centuries' worth of automatic musical instruments such as clocks, organs and music boxes. There's plenty more cycling to be had around Utrecht too: take your wheels to the hills and forests of the Utrecht Hill Ridge, or pedal south to reach the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park.
