  • Family-friendly site in the Maasduinen National Park
  • Near the border with Germany
  • Pool, paddling pool, playground and café-bar
Have a hol at Hoeve de Schaaf for heaps of outdoorsy and cultural options – and spanning across two countries too (for increased boasting rights when back home, obvs). Hoeve de Schaaf is right at the northern tip of the Maasduinen National Park, the 20-kilometre strip of north Limburg nature reserve between Nijmegen and Venlo. The surrounding heaths, woods and fens, traditional small villages and historic towns are tiptop spots for strolling, hiking and cycling; by car, Heijen is on the border with North Brabant, Gelderland and Germany, and Cologne and Dusseldorf are both reachable in about an hour. When you're not flitting around two countries and crossing borders with abandon, make some time for peaceful days on site too: there's loads of room to run, roam or kick a ball about, alongside an excellent range of leisure facilities. The outdoor pool and paddling pool come with a fab and lengthy slide snaking around above the water; if your tiddlies are too teeny for that, take them to swing and slide about the well-equipped playground instead, or let them bounce until they're giddy on the huge jumping pillow. Sporting tournaments as well as bingo nights are run by the entertainment team in high season. The site also has a café-bar with terrace, and allows barbecues.

Local attractions

Heijen is in North Limburg, on the border with North Brabant, Gelderland and Germany, in a green area within the Maasduinen National Park. Cycling and hiking trails to suit all sorts run all around the surrounding countryside and in the De Groote Peel National Park about an hour and a quarter's drive to the south west. Pedal through spectacular Limburg and Brabant landscapes to reach Gennep or Boxmeer, within easy cycling distance of the site at six and nine kilometres respectively (you'll need to take your wheels on the Afferden to Sambeek ferry to reach Boxmeer). Further afield at 26 or so kilometres is Grave, where you can cross the John S. Thompsonbrug bridge over the Maas river to reach Gelderland. And of course you'll fancy a day trip across the border too... From Heijen you can easily cross into Germany to explore the area around Kevelaer and the cities of the North Rhine-Westphalia region: Cologne and Dusseldorf are both within an hour's drive.
