  • A 40-minute drive from the huge Slagharen theme park
  • Busy programme of activities for kids in summer season
Free spirits and space seekers, wend your way through the woods of Dwingelderveld National Park to RCN Vakantiepark De Noordster for a stay that’s all designed by you. There are no allocated pitches here, so you can pick your spot and create your own little holiday haven. This being a conservation area, huge care was taken to preserve the natural environment when the site was set up, so whichever pitch you pick you’ll be surrounded by trees and bushes for shade, privacy and peace. That deeply rural vibe might lead you to feel like you’ve landed in the middle of nowhere; in fact it’s a mere five-minute drive to reach the nearest town, Dwingeloo, for shops, restaurants and cafés. There's loads to do for kids here, such as catching up with Alex Adventure and Spectacle Sammy for crafts, football games, dance evenings and feeding animals at the mini farm. Another stellar option is the fab indoor play room, entirely dedicated to stars and planets and where small explorers can climbing and scramble on planets or play planet football. When their diary decrees it, catch up with your small sorts over games of tennis, table tennis, pétanque or miniature golf, or accompany them to the playground or the splendid paddling pool and water play area. There’s an open-air pool next door to the site with free entry for guests during the summer season too. The brasserie is open all day and there's a snack bar for takeaways. For the ultimate zero-effort brekkie, pick up fresh rolls in the site's shop (which is also stocked with a small selection of fresh food and various essentials) – how’s that for a holiday win...?

Local attractions

Start by exploring the Dwingelderveld National Park around the site: trails long and short run throughout the woods and heathland, with many of them accessible and/or suitable for cyclists. A popular short route from the site is the 20-minute walk to the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope, one of the oldest radio telescopes in the world. Marathon types, meanwhile, can set out on the 23-kilometre running trail for some highly scenic training. For something more historic, make the 15-minute drive to the Oermusuem, which focuses on the Middle Ages and prehistoric exhibits. Be prepared to get stuck in with activities such as seeing if you can move stones in the traditional manner… Another attraction with a historic edge is the village of Orvelte open-air museum, half an hour away. Wander around the traditional farm buildings, see craftspeople in action and watch folk shows. Younger visitors can do a puzzle tour or take part in creative activities.
