  • Family site near the Netherlands-Germany border
  • Golf, miniature golf, tennis, museums and nightlife nearby
  • Pool with 50-metre waterslide, paddling pool and hot tub
Water is the order of the day at the Netherlands site of Camping De Oude Molen. (And hills, and bike rides, and Germany, but more of that in just a sec.) There's a hot tub here for your watery wallows, as well as an outdoor pool with a 50-metre waterslide and a paddling pool next door with kid-sized and colourful slides. Prefer to stay arid? Meander along to the pétanque court, settle down on the sun loungers, take the kids to the roomy playground, or venture inside to see what's what in the games room and the TV room. Camping De Oude Molen is a family site near the Netherlands-Germany border, a 10-minute walk from the hillside town, lively bar scene and golf course of Groesbeek, surrounded by spectacular scenery, forests and trails. The Hoge Veluwe National Park is about 40 minutes' drive away. Do prepare for plenty of pedalling while at this Gelderland site too… The cycling around here is spectacular, ranging from routes around the park or into the surrounding countryside and nearby Groesbeek forest, to the rail track from Groesbeek through to Kranenburg and then Kleve in Germany; obvs you'll have sussed already that pedalling among two different lands on one hol makes for maximum boasting rights… Ask at reception for the staff's advice on the best cycling and walking tours around the park – they'll be able to sell you handy hiking and cycling maps and give you top local tips. Camping De Oude Molen runs a miniature train to local tourist attractions, and holds regular events such as barbecue nights for guests. Its well-kept amenities include toilets, showers and cutely colourful jungle bathrooms just for the kids.

Local attractions

Camping De Oude Molen is 10 minutes' walk from the shops, restaurants and nightlife of the hillside town of Groesbeek, which is surrounded by hills and forests for hiking and cycling. A National Liberation Museum is in town and the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery is a couple of kilometres from the centre. For more outdoor days, the lakes and forests of the Overasseltse and Hatertse Fens are within about 20 minutes for peaceful wanders, and the heathlands, sand dunes and woodlands of the Hoge Veluwe National Park within 45 minutes' drive. You could also travel along to Veluwezoom National Park, also about 45 minutes away, or have an outdoor day of a different nature at the Netherlands Open Air Museum, 40 minutes away. The team also recommends a day investigating the Waal river city of Nijmegen, under 20 minutes by car; the Royal Burgers' Zoo 40 minutes away, and crossing the border by rail bike to Cleves/Kleve in Germany, the medieval town whose most famed native is Anne of Cleves.
