  • Well-maintained and peaceful site among spectacular views
  • In a stargazing haven with observatory on site
  • Restaurant, braais and regular game, sunset and scenery tours
The team at Rooisand Desert Ranch says the on-site stargazing and observatory tour are absolute musts. And so, pack your telescope, your sense of curiosity and your cooking bits and pieces (for what is stargazing without an accompanying barbie?) and take your stellar self to this stellar Namibian farm site. You'll spy stars and clear skies with ease from the ranch, as the Gamsberg region has virtually no light pollution and fair weather all year round; to make it simpler still, Rooisand's observatory has one of the biggest and most modern telescopes available for public viewing in all the land. Off site, Namibia is famed worldwide for its stargazing, with a low population density and low air pollution rate alongside its low light pollution: take a day and evening trip to the Gamsberg Plateau for stunning sky-based sights. Those not into astronomy (tsk) have an excellent selection of options to delve into by day instead, including walking trails to rock painting sites or hiking among the red dunes of the Namib Desert (red sands = Rooisand). Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Etosha Pan and Walvis Bay/Swakopmund are all easily accessible for self-guided adventures around the region, and the Rooisand team arranges scenery, game and sunset drives all year round. Within ambling distance, the town of Chausib is half a kilometre away. Rooisand is well set up for idle days as well as stargazing nights, with a setting among spectacular scenery; sun and wind shelters, and braais for guests' use. On-site chefs are to hand to whisk up meals in the restaurant; just make a reservation with the friendly team.

Pluto electric sand pitch

Liked: Friendly and professional lady at reception. Nice and quiet - only two other camp sites were occupied. Facilities at the camp site were great - car port, basin with water and braai facilities.

Disliked: Ablution facility was probably about 200 meters away from the camping site. Other campers possibly tried to adjust the gas geyser at the ablution with the result that it did not heat the water well - this could be addressed by putting instructions on or next to the geyser (just a suggestion).

Local attractions

Stargazing by night and hiking, photography, tours and mountain biking by day... this is a splendid spot for the lot, as well as for longer trips or overnighters to Namibian destinations such Saswakopmund, Sossusvlei/Sesriem and local mountain pass routes. Like the rest of the country, this is a stellar wildlife watching region too, where you'll be able to spy zebras and ostriches around the ranch, and where species of all sorts roam around the Gamsberg Nature Reserve just under an hour east. The reserve is also the setting for the Gamsberg mountain with that topping stargazing on its plateau; by day, clamber to its flat top for spectacular views of the Khomas highlands. And then head west, to the vast and utterly spectacular Namib-Naukluft National Park, a region the size of Switzerland that includes the Nambib Desert; Namibia's most visited destination Sossusvlei, and the highest sand dunes on the planet: all a must-see.
