  • Friendly site with mountain and lake views in southern Montenegro
  • Lovcen National Park, Lake Skadar and Adriatic coast within 40 minutes
  • Terrace bar and shop with local produce; 10 minutes' drive from town
Could there be many more splendid spots than this one, high in the mountains of Montenegro? Camp Oaza Lipa is about 15 minutes' drive from the Lovcen National Park and the towering 5,738-foot 'black mountain' that gave this country its name. But you don't even need to go that far for staggering mountain scenes: see these and views of Lake Skadar from the terrace of the site's bar, while you sup homemade local drinks and feast on fine fresh produce. The buffet breakfast is the kind of thing people write lyrical postcards about… This is a friendly, peaceful and flower-filled site, where you can stay among greenery and wake up to views of the peaks. (Hot showers in the washrooms help to see off any morning mountain chills…) Stock up on supplies and bites at the on-site shop: guests are welcome to cook on campfires and barbecues. It's a 10-minute drive to Cetinje, Montenegro's ancient capital, where shops, bars and restaurants share the stage with a brightly-hued medieval centre and a massive spread of museums.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Fantastic views at both dawn and sunset. Nice flat terraces for tent camping. Easy 5 minute walk up to the Lipa caves ticket office (the caves are a worthwhile thing to do). Good Internet access down by the bar. Very generous dinner available at the bar. Lovely friendly English speaking staff and 2 lovely little quiet dogs and a friendly cat.

Disliked: Very rough unmade Road if approached from the south (ie below). I recommend if coming from Podgorica you avoid the left off the main road that Google maps recommends down the windy unmade track, and instead drive a little further to the next left (signposted for a National Resterant called the Bellvedere) and take that instead - it’s a surfaced Road all the way down to the campsite that way. Cold water only for showers. A bit muddy in the parking area when wet.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Gyönyörű környék, aránylag könnyű megközelítés lakókocsival is.

Local attractions

After experiencing the lofty peaks of Montenegro from your berth at Camp Oaza Lipa, explore the subterranean depths five minutes' drive away at Lipa cave. Guided tours take you through a mile and a half of galleries and halls lined with alien rock formations and geological curiosities; extreme sorts can go with ropes and headtorches into the very heart of the cave. Hikers and nature spotters can step over to the Lovcen National Park (15 minutes' drive) for ascents of Mount Lovcen and trails through a wilderness of boars, bears, wolves and eagles, making time, as proud locals do to pay respects at the mausoleum of ruler and poet Petar II Petrovic Njegos. There's more fine country to be walked around Lake Skadar (half an hour) and its surrounding national park, though if you prefer an easier time of it you can also take boat cruises to the island monasteries, through floating fields of waterlilies. For further water-based frolics, beetle over to Budva on the Adriatic coast (40 minutes) for a very tempting mix of ancient citadel and sandy beaches, buzzing nightlife and ninth-century churches. Top it off with a trip to the Mediteran Aqua Park to hurtle down waterslides at speeds of 50 miles an hour, or chug more sedately on a water-taxi over to the lush greenery of Sveti Nikola island, kayaking around the rocky coves and picnicking in perfect peace.
