  • On the shores of one of Europe's oldest and clearest freshwater lakes
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of the town of Struga
  • Fishing for carp, trout and eel right from the site
Oh wow, this is a ridiculously scenic spot on the shores of UNESCO-listed Lake Ohrid. One of Europe's deepest, oldest and clearest freshwater lakes and hailed as the pearl of the Balkans, this place has got at all – spectacular scenery, humbling history and a whole heap of watersports and outdoorsy activities to round off your break at Camping Livadista very nicely. In fact, it's such a great lake that NASA decided to name one of the lakes of Saturn's largest moons after it. The site is carpeted with grass and surrounded by nature, and has spacious pitches that are shaded by mature Macedonian trees. Traditional specialties are served at the on-site restaurant, or (if you arrange a fishing license) you can fish for the likes of trout, carp and eel right from the site for a fish-fuelled barbecue. Entertainment is an important part of Camp Livadista, which has made a big effort with its multisports pitch; kids can play everything from football to basketball, volleyball and miniature golf, or just run around in the wide open space if their ball skills aren't up to scratch. Guests can go for morning hikes along the 1.5-kilometre beach, which runs right in front of the site, and there are heaps of scenic cycling trails nearby, as well as pedalo rides and scuba diving excursions. You're half an hour's walk to the village of Radozda, and the city of Struga – with heaps of restaurants, bars, shops and historic monuments – is less than 15 minutes away by car. Historic Ohrid is less than half an hour's drive away.

Local attractions

As you'll be staying on the shores of a huge lake, expect plenty of fun outdoor and water-based activities within a short drive, such as tandem paragliding flights, scuba diving and canoeing/kayaking excursions over in Ohrid, and more diving in the village of Gradishte, around 40 minutes' drive away. For walkers and cyclists, there are several mountaineering trails on Jablanica and Galichica. There are plenty of boat and land tours that take you around some or all of Lake Ohrid's 90-kilometre perimeter – or, of course, you can go it alone. Begin your tour about 15 minutes' drive away in the city of Struga and visit its Poetry Bridge, where in August poets and writers from all over the world gather to attend the famed Struga Poetry Evenings. Wander around the streets and gaze up at its 18th- and 19th-century churches and mosques, visit the Old Bazaar and then top it all off with a visit to the Black Drin river estuary and its three spectacular beaches. Then head east around the lake to visit Ohrid's ethereal Old Town, which spills down a gently sloping hill and is filled with ancient churches dotted around cobblestone streets that are lined with traditional restaurants and lakeside cafés, all presided over by the ruins of a medieval castle. Venture south along the lakeshore and stop off the at the Bay of Bones Museum, a reconstruction of a settlement from the Iron and Bronze ages, then continue further south to visit the Eastern Orthodox Monastery of Saint Naum before you head on your merry way for a border crossing into Albania. Drive through the little village Tushemishte to the small town of Pogradec for more sightseeing and a lunch of freshwater fish and other tasty local eats; when you've had your fill, head back up to the north-west shore and cross back over into Macedonia.
