It’s an easy life for guests at Agricampeggio Torre Sabea, a seaside site just outside the town of Gallipoli on the Salento coast. For starters, it’s a short stroll over the road to get to the pebble beach for splashing and swimming in the sea. Seeking a sandy stretch instead? Take the free shuttle service to be whisked off to the lovely beach at Rivabella (or hire a bike on site to pedal the kilometre-long route instead). Another shuttle plies the route down to Gallipoli (for a small extra charge) for easy history-tinged wanders followed by more beach time. Dinners and drinks are easily sorted too: a few minutes’ walk away are a supermarket and a cluster of restaurants and bars serving up tasty traditional meals and fresh fish dishes. There’s also a bar on site for even more convenient drinkies, and local producers pop by from time to time to offer their wares up for tastings and sales. Those of you travelling with canine chums will be chuffed to hear they’re welcomed with open arms here and have access to most areas of the site. Pooches can paddle at the beach or join you on the shuttle too.

Local attractions

It’s very much worth taking the shuttle (or hiring a bike) to scoot down to Gallipoli: the town’s lovely historic centre is on a little island almost entirely surrounded by well-preserved medieval walls and reached via a 17th-century bridge. Inside the walls lurk a castle, baroque churches and lots of little cafés. More historic ramblings can be had at the Roman settlement of Alezio, 10 minutes away by car, and the baroque city of Lecce, half an hour away, which is also home to a Roman theatre, an archaeological museum and a tourist train for stress-free sightseeing. All down this stretch of coast are some excellent beaches, and there’s also a waterpark 10 minutes’ walk from the site (ask reception staff for discount details before you hit the waterslides). If you fancy immersing yourself in the big blue, diving centres are in Gallipoli.
