What a beach… and accessible straight from your Foggia site too. Settle down on sands and in sea from beachside site Camping Fontana delle Rose, between the towns of Mattinata and Vieste on Italy's southern Adriatic coast. The site's also among the spectacular landscape of the Gargano National Park, on the Mount Gargano promontary and home to the Tremiti Islands archipelago and the famed Umbra forest, for days of wildlife watching and walks. As there's sandy access right from here, guests sensibly use Fontana delle Rose as a base for sea sailing: the team can organise boat trips or rent boats and rafts so you can paddle along to potter around the local sea caves. Around 15 kilometres from it all is the seaside town of Vieste, where you can hail boats to take you to the sands of the Tremiti Islands. Fontana delle Rose is a spacious and peaceful place, with summer activities such as beach yoga, music evenings and a kids' club. Eats are easily arranged at the restaurant-pizzeria; beachside drinks are sorted at the bar, and there's a mini market and a roomy barbecue area for those cooking up their own cuisine. For those (rare) times when you're all out of the water or off the beach, a TV room, tennis courts and a play area are also to hand to keep all ages entertained.

Local attractions

There's stacks to do around here by sea or by land, such as horse riding in the national park, hiking the local paths, or taking a craft out to the several sea caves and creeks around this part of the Adriatic coast that can only be reached by boat. The walking trails of the surrounding Gargano National Park will take you through a wildlife haven where you should be able to see flamingos, storks and white-headed ducks. Within the park, famed and popular Umbra forest is home to deer and wild boar among its giant trees. Old and scenic towns and villages are easy to get to from here, like the historical centre of Mattinata (eight kilometres) and its Palazzo Mantuano, Palazzo Giordano and the Monte Saraceno archaeological site. Santuario di San Michele, 25 kilometres away in the mountaintop town of Monte Sant'Angelo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a castle, the Tomba di Rotari monument and the Tancredi Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions of Gargano. Boat trips leave from Vieste (15 kilometres) and Manfredonia (25 kilometres) to visit the Tremiti Islands, their pine forests and sandy coves.
