Pitch was a decent size, electricity connection on the other side of the road so need a long cable! (added by visitor 14 aug 2018)

  • Family-run site on the banks of the Naab river near Pielenhofen
  • Half an hour's drive from UNESCO-listed medieval Regensburg
  • Traditional Bavarian restaurant and beer garden on site
If you fancy the idea of spending a chunk of your holiday time messing about in, on or by a river, you’ll be among like-minded folks at the Bavarian bolthole of Camping Naabtal-Pielenhofen, on the banks of the Naab river a few minutes outside Pielenhofen. Swimming and fishing are the order of the day here, and a couple of local companies can kit you out with canoes or kayaks for longer aquatic adventures. On land, a fab riverside cycle path runs to the outskirts of Regensburg where you can join the path alongside the mighty Danube all the way to Vienna, Bratislava and beyond. Constant energetic excursions aren’t compulsory, however – time spent on site is equally rewarding too. Contained within its six hectares, Camping Naabtal-Pielenhofen has a tennis court, a playground and lots of comfy grassy nooks for afternoons of reading or picnicking. And whether you’ve been out on a hefty hike or spent the day lounging, you’ll prob want to use the wellness facilities: a sauna to loosen the limbs and a sunbed for guaranteed holiday glows. Active pursuits or idle times done for the day, it’ll soon be time to welcome the evening in traditional Bavarian style, sampling local brews in the cosy beer garden (Bavaria is rightly famed as Germany’s beer capital, after all...). Eats are highly recommended alongside the beers, and you’ll not have to wobble too far to acquire them; the site’s restaurant serves up sausages, stews and the like mere steps away.

Liked: Good sanitary blocks on a nicely kept campground. River is peaceful and you can hire canoes nearby to paddle down it. Restaurant has simple but really fresh and tasty food. Good cycle paths nearby.

Disliked: The road along opposite side of the river is very noisy at peak times. The campsite ONLY TAKES CASH!! Make sure you have cash for your pitch fee and the bar/restaurant. Also make sure you note your electricity hook-up reading and you arrive and leave. No information appears to be computerised - it’s written in a ledger or on little cards!

Liked: In a very pleasant location by the River Naab about a mile from the village of Pielenhofen. The River was great for swimming in and the children loved it. The food in the on site restaurant was traditional Bavarian dishes (Schnitzel, Knodel, Wurst etc) but pretty good and decent portions. As an alternative, Kloisters in Pielenhofen with its decking overlooking the river was excellent) for food. Supermarkets and drinks shop were also only a ten minute drive in Nittendorf, as was the railway station at Etterzhausen (free parking and a good way to explore Regensburg). Good options for cycling and walking/running (unmarked walking forest tracks in the woods to the east). The site had strict rules to keep the noise down at night and they seemed to pretty well observed. Pitches were clean and a decent size for a large family tent and car.

Disliked: The cleanliness off the shower block by the river was pretty variable and by night time they were sometimes a bit well worn (not surprising with all the swimming traffic), although the block up by reception always seemed to be in much better shape. Everything on the site was cash only (perhaps more common in Germany than the UK). We understood there was free wi-fi near reception but never worked out how to connect to it (not a big deal for us really). The road over the river from the site was fairly busy. Didn't disturb us much but might be something to consider when asking for a pitch if a light sleeper. There is a sign stressing swimming is at own risk but my daughter proved that it's perfectly possible to face plant into the river bed if you dive in (totally her own fault bearing in mind we'd checked the depth and been swimming there for two days), so best to keep an eye on children!

Liked: Lovely warm welcome on arrival. It had been raining hard prior to our arrival and our pitch was too muddy for a family and dog. Staff were very helpful in relocating us.

Local attractions

Bring your bike or hire one on arrival, for this is prime cycling space – riverside and rural routes are all around, and cycling is a fab way to get to some of the local towns. This being river territory, you should take to the waters too, by launching your own craft directly from the site, joining family-friendly guided tours nearby, or hiring canoes, kayaks, rowing boats and paddleboards about 15 minutes’ drive from the site. Pick up a fishing licence on site and you can dangle a rod in the river as you go. An hour away by bike (or around half an hour by car) is the well-preserved medieval city of Regensburg, a highly recommended destination for a day of pottering through its UNESCO-listed Old Town, visiting the Roman Porta Praetoria and the Gothic cathedral, and taking a tour of the vast Thurn and Taxis Palace. For more historical attractions, take your pick from the marble hall at the neo-classical Walhalla, the circular Hall of Liberation in Kelheim, and spooky Wolfsegg Castle (ghost hunters, keep your eyes peeled for the White Woman).
