Fond of tinkling the ivories? There’s a piano in the lounge at Camping l’Eden de la Vanoise, and whether you’re Chopin or just Chopsticks standard you’ll have music in your heart while holidaying here. On the banks of the Isère, a couple of minutes’ drive from the village of Landry, this gem of a site is open summer and winter for walks, rides, downhill slides and other mountainous adventures in Haute-Savoie’s Tarentaise valley. Whether you’re hitting the pistes of nearby La Plagne, hiking the hills or sunbathing by the lake, you’ll want a comfortable base to do it from, and this place surely delivers. That aforementioned piano lounge contains a big TV (and a roaring fire for chillier months), making it a splendid spot to unwind from alpine exertions with drinks from the bar. There’s a snack bar open in school holidays, and plenty for smaller visitors to get up to when not snacking, from a bouncy castle, trampoline and inflatable paddling pool to a games room with table football, billiards and board games. They can splurge their savings on ice cream, lollies and postcards from reception and earn more pocket money picking up daily deliveries of fresh bread. Who can resist a pool? Who can resist two pools, one outdoors for cooling off, one indoors, with mountain views and heated to 30 degrees? No-one, obvs. The helpful team also hire out mountain bikes and provide a shuttle bus to local ski lift points.

Local attractions

Several top skiing areas are close by: it’s a 10-minute drive to La Plagne, and between 40 and 50 minutes to Tignes, Val d’Isère and Les Arcs. Many ski lifts operate in summer and can accommodate mountain bikes, meaning hours of hikes and rides through the fab scenery of Vanoise National Park. The 11-kilometre bike trail between Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Aime runs along the banks of the Isère; if you want to get on the river, head to the H2O Sports Evolution centre, a couple of minutes from the site, for whitewater rafting, kayaking and canyoning. For more relaxed times on the water, it’s a 10-minute drive to Le Gothard, whose lake has a sandy beach with supervised bathing, barbecue areas and zipwires in the nearby forest. If you're a zipwire enthusiast, there are around 15 more to sample in the valley, some up to 150 feet high and 650 feet long. You might need a relaxing massage after that high-altitude stuff, so make for the spa at Montchavin, 10 minutes away, for all things pampering. And for indoor larks without a cowbell or a crampon in sight, try ten-pin bowling at Les Arcs.
