  • Spectacularly scenic park with direct access to Lac de l'Oignin
  • Golf course and horse riding centre within a short drive or cycle
  • Hire pedal boats, floats and fishing kit to use on the lake
What a view to wake up to: right by the shores of Lac de l'Oignin among a mixed woodland and surrounded by smashing views of the hills all around, this highly scenic park lies 400 metres above sea level and is within 75 minutes’ drive from Geneva and its expansive lake. As you might expect from a lakeside spot, heaps of watery fun is on the cards at Camping Paradis Les Gorges du Haut Bugey, with not only two fab outdoor pools but direct access to the lake too for various water-based activities: hire a pedal boat to explore the shore, various floats to loll about on, or bits of fishing kit (and a fishing licence) to put your angling skills to the test. Should the order of the hour instead be something on dry land, that’s easily sorted here too: plenty of walking and cycling trails lie around the lake and its calm countryside surrounds, and sportif types can stay amply active with lots of suitable facilities on site: a football pitch, a volleyball court, ping pong tables and a pétanque court will be at your disposal daily. There's heaps here to keep littlies out of trouble too: if they’re not bounding around the playground, they’l likely be spied hanging out with furry critters like goats, donkeys and horses at the petting zoo. Also for the amusement of small people aged between six and 12 years is a kids’ club, and in the evenings, guests of all ages can settle back for family-friendly fun in the form of dances, cabaret and karaoke. Eats, drinks and supplies are at the snack bar and pizzeria with takeaway service, and at the shop with freshly baked bread and pastries, local produce and gas bottles. Barbecues are allowed, so fire one up, braise a few bangers and settle back to see the sun set over the lake from your smashingly scenic pitch. Speaking of which, pitches are also splendidly spacious and all the hedging and mature trees that dot the site’s landscape provides guests with plenty of privacy. Amenities include chemical toilets and a heated toilet and shower block too, and the laundry area's washing machines and tumble dryers can be used for a small fee.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: Beautiful nature around

Disliked: Awful!! Never again! A company of drunk french people were screaming and shouting loudly at the campsite bar till 23:30. We chose this place with a hope to sleep well after a long trip, as it was far away from highways and big cities. I asked campsite manager, a girl, what's happening? She said it's normal, it's a special night... whaaat? Are you a bar or a camping place with exact rules? Terrible service, not recommended

Local attractions

For those nuts about putting, a six-hole golf course course is within seven kilometres; should you instead be of a rather more horsey leaning, an equestrian centre is within the same distance for a trot around the site’s spectacular surrounds. Bourg-en-Bresse is within 40 minutes’ drive for wanders around historic hotspots such as its 16th-century Gothic-style monastery, and over in Oyonnax are a couple of museums worth an explore: one dedicated to plastics and combs, and the other to the story of the French Resistance. For pamper-based days, the handsome little spa town of Divonne-les-Bains – right near the France-Geneva border – is well worth a trip to for wellness treatments and scenic strolls or pedals around the perimeter of its three-kilometre lake.
