  • Small, friendly adults-only site by the River Charente
  • English-run in a peaceful setting close to St Laurent de Ceris
  • Canoeing, fishing, pool and plenty of peaceful riverside spots
Wash away your troubles and stresses at the peaceful adults-only Camp Laurent, an English-run site on the banks of the Charente river, just outside Saint-Laurent-de-Céris in the south west of France. It’s easy to get out and about from here, as the spot's on one of the region’s many cycling routes and there are more than 1,000 kilometres of trails in the surrounding area – rent a bike from the park and get in that saddle. Prefer to bask by the water? No problem: there’s easy river access at the bottom of a wooded bank, a prime place for four-legged friends to cool off at this dog-friendly site. If you’re hanging around on the grounds, there are plenty of peaceful riverside spots where you can sit with a glass of wine and watch the butterflies flitting around in spring and summer, or you can cool off on hot days in the on-site pool. Camp Laurent is just under five kilometres from Saint-Laurent-de-Céris, where you can grab some grub at the market or boulangerie, or sit down to a meal at the bar-restaurant. If you’re angling to fish in the Charente while you’re in the area, pick up a temporary permit at the boulangerie while you’re in town.

Liked: Lovely peaceful site. A variety of different lounging chairs round by the pool, beautiful! The shower and toilet facilities were very clean. Washing up liquid was provided if needed and there was an honesty box for ice creams and eggs that their chickens & ducks had laid. The nearest village at St Laurent de Ceris had a top restaurant serving delicious food and the owner was super welcoming but the opening hours were limited.

Disliked: There was a huge amount of flies during our visit which proved very annoying. This is a problem that we feel maybe needs to be addressed as we’ve not experienced this before so it could be seasonal!

Electric optional grass pitch (comfort)

Liked: There was plenty of room, pitches were large, weather very hot, decent size swimming pool for the amount is people there. The local village was 2.5 miles away which had a nice restaurant. There were some local cycle routes nearby. The camp site was on one route. Supermarket was about 6-8 miles away. Showers & toilets were good. Very friendly English owners.

Disliked: The only thing that bugged us a bit was the constant barking of dogs at night from a local farm.

Liked: Beautiful site, river at the bottom which the dogs loved, serene, peaceful and Tracy & Pete are the most welcoming of couples. Facilities had that extra personal touch with roomy bathrooms and proper showers. It was delightful.

Disliked: Nothing, it was lovely in every respect.

Local attractions

If hiking and cycling haven’t been enough exercise for you, head to the Haute Charente lakes, 30 minutes from Camp Laurent – follow the trails on horseback or by foot, throw out a line to try your luck at fishing, go kayaking, boating, canoeing or windsurfing, or just relax on one of the sandy beaches. Take a break from the go-go-go by slowing things down for a dive into the history and culture of the area. Visit the stunning châteaux at Rochechouart and Rochefoucauld, both within 35 minutes’ drive of Camp Laurent, or make the trip to the nearby Confolens to wander the medieval streets and – if you time your visit right – join in the August Festival de Folklore. You could also explore the many museums, galleries, theatres and spectacular churches in the town of Angoulême, a 45-minute drive from Camp Laurent, or pay your respects at the famed WWII memorial village of Oradour-sur-Glane. If you have the time and are with a patient driver, the town of Cognac is an hour and a quarter’s drive from the site. While you’re there, do tours and tastings at the Hennessy, Remy Martin and Meukow distilleries and, when you’re finished, test whether you can still walk in a straight line with a visit to the public gardens.
