  • In the grounds of an 18th-century castle
  • 11km from the Bay of the Somme
  • Access to sister site 500 metres away with pools, bar and restaurant
A handsome woodland in the grounds of an 18th-century castle – how does that sound for a French and Picardy hol? Sort your stay at Camping Le Clos Cacheleux for this and more: this pretty place is around half an hour's drive from the shoreline and watersports of the spectacular Bay of the Somme. Bring your rod along when you're holidaying here, as Clos Cacheleux has its own fishing pond for you to try your luck at while the kids are happily entertained at the playground, bouncy castle, trampoline, pétanque court and table tennis under the beady eye of your other half. Loads more options are at Clos Cacheleux's sister site half a kilometre away, where Clos Cacheleux guests can access indoor and outdoor pools, a bar, a shop, a kids' club and a restaurant. Amenities are plentiful to keep everyone shipshape and pristine: the site has two toilet blocks with hot water, free showers, plenty of washbasins, three large sinks for hand washing clothes, a disabled toilet and two bathrooms with big family showers, kids' washbasins, a bathtub and a baby changing table. There's also a laundry room with washing machine, hairdryer, iron and ironing board. Clos Cacheleux is a kilometre and a half from the Somme department town of Miannay, about 15 minutes' drive from Abbeville. There's a food shop on site; otherwise, bag your supplies in Miannay or at the Abbeville market on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Local attractions

Arrange a few days at least at the stunning Bay of the Somme around 30 minutes' drive away, acclaimed as one of the most spectacularly scenic bays in the world. Beaches and cliffs await for hours of leisure and hiking along the bay's many walking trails; arty and writerly sorts should take along their paintboxes and notebooks too, as the bay's provided inspiration for the likes of Degas, Jules Verne and Colette. This is top nature spotting and birdwatching land, with harbour seals to be spied among the sands at low tide, and migratory birds of several species stopping off on their journeys north or south. Parc du Marquenterre (35 minutes' drive) is the best spot on the bay for birdwatching, among its dune, marshland and forest reserve with hides and nature trails. Saint Valery sur Somme (25 minutes) has a most eventful history because of its strategic setting on a promontory facing the bay (Joan of Arc and William the Conqueror both wandered here). To follow in historic footsteps, start off at the marina for a saunter along the docks and to the Somme estuary, then pootle around the cobbled streets, remains of the city walls, and the sailors' quarters with colourful fishermen's houses.
