  • Transparent bubbles in the Hauts-de-France region’s Retz forest
  • A short drive to Chantilly and its historic racecourse and stables
  • Seasonal stargazing workshops, guided woodland walks and nature trails
Has it ever been suggested that you live in a bubble? Then how about a cosy one among the Hauts-de-France region’s Retz forest (one of France’s largest)? This peaceful and bucolic place is a haven for horsey sorts, as it’s a mere several kilometres from Chantilly and its historic 18th-century stables and famed racecourse, the latter of which hosts one of the longest-running horse shows in France. Also in the region are the swanky champagne houses and art deco centre of Reims, for wobbly tastings of bubbly and scenic city wanders. Set among wide open countryside and woods in the Picardie region, Les Bulles de Fleury’s bubbles are beaut even when it’s raining, and at night the views of stars and the sky too are extra spectacular. Each season Les Bulles de Fleury organises themed activities that focus on nature and the environment, like guided woodland walks and nature trails to spot local critters like deer, foxes and wild boar among the likes of oak, ash and cherry trees. Also splendidly, the site holds stargazing workshops to teach celestial students how to spot stars and constellations, all so that they may apply their new-found astronomy skills using their dome’s own telescope. The bubbles all come comfily kitted out with a cosy double bed to ensure a restful night’s sleep, as well as a dining table and chairs and heating during cooler climes. Close to the accommodation, eco-friendly dry toilets are on hand for guests’ use too.

Local attractions

To properly please horsey sorts, an equestrian centre is a short distance from base for handy horseback hacks, and over in Chantilly is the 18th-century horse museum – one of the most visited equestrian sites in the world – plus the town’s racecourse, which hosts the longest-trotting horse shows on French soil. Close by in Villers-Cotterêts there’s plenty of historic stuff to potter around among, like the 16th-century Noüe Castle, the Henry II Pavilion and Church of Saint Nicolas. For fans of 20th-century war history, there’s also a military cemetery for fallen French soldiers of World War I, and the Guard's Grave British Military Cemetery too. A wee bit over an hour’s drive away, tour the unofficial capital of the Champagne wine-growing region Reims, and wander in and out of its plentiful champagne houses for cellar tours and tastings. If you’ve managed to remain upright after all that fizzingly fab and fine French plonk, then take your tour further to explore the city’s fab art deco core, as well as its sixth-century Saint-Remi Abbey and the Palais du Tau.
