  • Green and peaceful park just outside Aire-sur-la-Lys
  • Around an hour from Calais, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Dunkirk and Lille
  • Cycle to Aire then pedal to the Caps Et Marais D'Opale natural park
Brits heading south, travellers heading north... and anyone seeking a scenic space from which to venture out to northern France seaside days, countryside walks and urban sightseeing should give this place some serious consideration. The Pas-de-Calais site of Camping La Petite Forêt is in a green and peaceful setting an hour from Calais, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Dunkirk and Lille – and under 10 minutes' drive from the highly handsome riverside town of Aire-sur-la-Lys. Yet more? The fab Caps Et Marais D'Opale Natural Regional Park is within 25 minutes to the north west for wanders, beach days and wildlife watching and wanders around the vast forest of Clairmarais. You're well placed here too if your holiday plotting involves giving the car a holiday as well, as several hiking paths start from Aire-sur-la-Lys, three and a half kilometres away (reachable by foot or bike via the D187 and the Rue de Constantinople). Or cycle into town, then – if your legs are up for it – pedal the 15 or 20 kilometres to Arques or Saint-Omer in the Caps Et Marais D'opale Natural Regional Park for more sightseeing and a richly deserved rich lunch. Too tiring? Ramble around the colourful Camping La Petite Forêt grounds instead, preferably with a picnic packed using bits from the supermarket a couple of kilometres away. The play area and free wifi can keep kids and teens occupied while you then wrestle with the tongs for the evening barbecue… or you could remain very relaxed indeed and sort dinner from the snack bar open on summer weekends.

Local attractions

An early stop when holidaying here should be the old town of Aire-sur-la-Lys, sitting pretty on both banks of the Lys. Visit on a Friday if at all poss, for the splendid little market on the cobblestones beside the UNESCO-listed belfry tower; after that (and particularly if you've indulged somewhat on market produce), a climb to the top of the tower is in order for views over the town. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site is at the Audomarois marshes between Flanders and Artois, the only wetlands in France still cultivated in these modern times. The best way to traverse their waterways is via a bacôve or flat-bottomed boat, bookable on a cruise from Saint-Omer or on a self-guided trip – look out for the smallholdings still producing food among the marshlands. As well as a look around the museums and memorials of Dunkirk, sightseers in northern France on a World War II remembrance trail should also take time for La Coupole (10 minutes' drive), the war museum inside a huge disused bunker.
