  • Peaceful family site three kilometres from Bray-Dunes beach
  • Less than 10 kilometres from Plopsaland De Panne theme park
  • Accessible sauna and hammam, games room and immaculate amenities
As if vast sand dunes and gorgeous sandy beaches aren’t enough, there’s the Belgian border, Eurotunnel terminal and port of Dunkirk all within a short drive of this northern France site... which is a well-hailed, welcoming and perfectly placed park a few minutes from the North Sea coastal town of Ghyvelde. The Nord department’s Caravaning du Lac is well set up for cosy days in between all that, so do be sure to schedule in some time around base too. There’s an accessible sauna and hammam to sink into and steam at, and the site as a whole is highly praised for its cleanliness, friendliness and stellar location within easy reach of several tiptop destinations of the Opal Coast and Nord-Pas-de-Calais: ‘fantastic’, ‘a great find’ and ‘perfect’ are a teeny selection of the compliments heaped upon here by former guests. Caravaning du Lac has been welcoming guests since 1982, to its peaceful and family-friendly setting three kilometres north of Bray-Dunes and the Belgian border, 15 minutes' drive from the North Sea seaside resort of Dunkirk, and 10 from the Plopsaland De Panne theme park. Eurotunnel access at Calais is 45 minutes away and the city of Lille is reachable in an hour. As well as that sauna and hammam (where, quite frankly, you’ll probably spend the majority of your on-site time), there’s a games room and TV room for other indoor days, and a pétanque court for your fresh air (and French holiday) requirements. The immaculately-maintained amenities include a launderette, washing-up area, disabled facilities, and (again, check out the reviews) clean and modern showers with lashing of piping hot water.

Local attractions

There’s so much to do around this part of France that you’ll probably want to extend your stay, or, if you’re a Brit, nip back across the Channel to beg extra leave from work before zipping straight back. The splendid beaches around the Opal Coast, including the long stretches of Bray-Dunes, Zuydcoote, Malo-les-Bains and De Panne, will likely be a first stop; more sands are at historic Dunkirk 13 kilometres away, where there’s also a golf course, a museum and monuments relating to World War II. An absolute must from here is the Dune Marchand National Nature Reserve, a few minutes’ drive or short bike ride to the north of the site, covering 83 hectares around Bray-Dunes, Zuydcoote and one of the dunes of Flanders. The reserve is a breeding ground for underwater seals and is home to over 300 plant species including orchids and alder trees: follow the marked trails, and drop into the visitor centre in Zuydcoote to find out more.
