Modern life getting you down? Slow it down at Camping Les Colombes, a family- and couple-friendly site on the outskirts of Aubencheul-au-Bac village in the Nord department of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Les Colombes is well placed as a jumping-off point for exploration – there are loads of walking and cycling paths nearby and the Scarpe-Escaut Regional Nature Park is only 45 minutes’ drive from the site, giving you tons of adventurous possibilities. If you’d prefer to plant yourself in one spot and not move during your hols, make your way back to the site and pull up a stool next to the fishing pond that’s brimming with bream, pike, tench, black bass, carp and roach. Try your luck – you might just be catching dinner. Before you get to feasting, build up more of an appetite with table tennis, pétanque or a turn in the games room, then plop your haul (or some supplies from the supermarket in the village) on the barbecue for some grilled munch. Wash your meal down with a drink from the common room bar before heading back to your own little slice of France, surrounded by hedges that’ll help you feel like you’re the only one at Les Colombes. Those that want to venture out into the real world for an evening can grab a table at one of the nearby restaurants, then scurry back to site for a spot of night fishing. One important thing: don’t toddle off to bed without remembering to order some bread and pastries for the next day…

Local attractions

The Battle of the Somme was fought about an hours’ drive south of Camping Les Colombes, and history buffs will find plenty of interest in the area. Start in the medieval town of Cambrai, 20 minutes’ drive from the site, where you can pick up several trails that join important sites from the war. Make your way to the city of Arras to explore the Carrière Wellington (quarry tunnels used by soldiers during the war) and visit the Place des Héros, then travel to Péronne for the Great War museum – housed in the 13th-century Château de Péronne – and the Alfred Danicourt art museum, which has its own WWI stories to tell. Both places are within 45 minutes of Les Colombes. It’s not all war, war, war around here either, and there’s tons to do of a lighter nature: If you’re down in the dumps, put a bounce back in your step at the trampoline park 40 minutes away, or head to the archaeological park at Douai, try one of the nearby waterparks or learn about the area’s mining history, all less than half an hour’s drive from the site.
