  • Restored medieval farmsteads with spectacular views near Souillac
  • A 45-minute drive to Rocamadour; wine tastings in the Dordogne valley
  • Outdoor pool with slide, sports, restaurant, snack bar and creperie
If swish and packed with modern facilities is what you’re after, then you might just want to pause for a sec and peruse this site’s pics. Some 15 minutes’ drive from the historic Dordogne town of Souillac and with splendid views out across the surrounding countryside, Domaine de La Paille Basse is set in a remote hilltop woodland 250 metres above sea level, with many family-friendly facilities housed across three handsome and pristinely restored medieval farm buildings. You’ll probably want to check out the pool area first – or at least the kids will when they find out there’s a four-lane super slide to swoosh down. The rest of the family can splash around in the pool or bask alongside, or instead avail themselves of sports and games facilities like ping pong, basketball, football, water volleyball, tennis and pétanque. Aqua aerobics classes run in July and August. Also in summer, kids will be most entertained by the site’s resident clown and teddy bear mascot, as well as the kids' club activities every morning such as treasure hunts, dancing and cuddles with furry critters at the mini farm… And when they’re not being occupied by this plethora of pursuits, they’ll most likely be spied at one of the site’s two playgrounds or playing with new pals in the games room. The bar serves relaxed evening drinks on the terrace under the shade of a huge horse chestnut tree, where there's evening entertainment too in peak season. Homemade regional eats are served at the restaurant for dining in or taking away; there's also a snack bar and creperie, and a shop for the self caterers.

Route directions

Please note: It's highly recommended that guests don't rely on a satnav, as it's likely to be incorrect. From the A20, take Exit 55 for Souillac. At the second roundabout after the toll, drive towards Salignac. Follow signs only for 'La Paille Basse'; the site is eight kilometres from Souillac.

Local attractions

Set between the pretty Périgord region and the town of Souillac, the holiday park is surrounded by national heritage sites, cultural activities and the promise of sampling many a tasty gastronomic treat: right in the Dordogne valley with Rocamadour and Sarlat both within 50 minutes’ drive. History hunters can catch a spot of natural history at the Lascaux caves and the national prehistory museum in Les Eyzies, or if you’re more of an active sort, you can round up the family, load them into canoes or kayaks and embark on a gentle paddle along the Dordogne river. Excursions to the lush and local Dordogne valley vineyards are just one of the many top trips off site; also highly recommended by site staff is a trip to one of the many local farms, some of which produce France’s famed foie gras.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch (premium)

Liked: Its clean facilities and grounds. Very helpful reception and bar/shop staff.

Disliked: The distance from Souillac, along a narrow road and then up its private single lane to a remote destination in the middle of the forest. Impossible to escape from should there be a forest fire which is a risk in France. 8kms to Souillac along this narrow road, meant it wasn,t an enjoyable location to pop out to any vilage. Far too isolated which the inacurate description sadly missed. Very family oriented which was fine, but the description quotes peaceful, but there are dozens of lodges plus camping facilities so the number of happy, noisy children makes a mockery of "peaceful" Wifi only available at the bar.
