  • Peaceful site surrounded by nature, six kilometres from Étretat
  • UNESCO-listed coastal city of Le Havre half an hour's drive away
  • Bike hire on site; surrounded by the hiking trails of the GR21
Set yourself up here for a swell French countryside stay; and even better, this most pleasing bucolic locale is a short drive from the sands and the sea of Étretat, plus a petit and verily pretty beach at Vaucottes village. Le Clos des Hautes Loges is a properly peaceful site set across one lush and exceptionally lovely hectare, six kilometres from the chalk and flint cliffs of Étretat and a swift car journey from the coast... And if you'd rather leave the engine at home and take to two wheels for spins out to the sea, then the site’s very handy bike hire service will see you right. Hautes Loges’ self-contained gypsy caravans are decked out in cosy country-style furnishings, and each have a kitchenette that’s equipped with a fridge, hobs and an oven, plus a hood extractor for when things get steamy or smoking; lounging around and dining is sorted in the onboard living area, which has a dining table and a TV, plus a sofa that doubles as a bed that sleeps up to two kids (grownups’ sleepytime options are over in the large alcove bed). For sublime open-air dines in clement climes, take your home-cooked fodder out and feast at the bistro furniture on the balcony terrace, or make use of your own private garden for barbecued bites scoffed (and washed down with a local wine) around the picnic table. When it comes to food in the mornings, if you’d rather leave the baguette breaking to someone else in the morning, to leave you with a little more time in bed, then breakfasts are served in the grand house near the caravan. When it comes to your sanitary amenities, they can be found in the caravan, which houses a private bathroom with a toilet, a washbasin and a shower – spot on for those a little precious about the privacy of their privy.

Local attractions

Strap up your comfiest hiking boots, because Hautes Loges is very close to the long-distance GR21 hiking trail; precisely 46 coastal and inland walking circuits ranging from six to 22 kilometres lie along this long coastal laneway between Le Tréport and Le Havre, and all are detailed in a brochure available from tourist offices across Normandy’s land. A 10-minute trip by car will bring you to the Ecomuseum of Apples and Cider, where you can fill your head with knowledge of about the various stages of the artisanal cider-making process (and fill your mouth with actual cider), while kids (and/or animal-adoring adults) feed the museum’s flock of resident Norman geese. The splendid little port settlement of Fécamp – famed for its Benedictine liqueur, still brewed today in distilleries around the town – is 13 kilometres away, and is filled with smashing seafood restaurants and attractions such as a fishing museum, a 10th-century castle and an abbey church and Benedictine palace. Also worth an explore are the villages of the Côte d'Albâtre along the road to Dieppe, through the floral coastline of Honfleur and then on to the coastal communes of Trouville and Deauville. For more history-based sightseeing, the major port town and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Le Havre is an easy 33 kilometres away; the town is filled to the gills with spectacular buildings designed by renowned architect, Auguste Perret, and has a swimming pool created by architect Jean Nouvel; other must-see attractions include St Joseph's Church and the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre, as well as the merveilleux André Malraux Museum of Modern Art ('MuMa') for its collection of impressionist paintings (one of France’s largest, no less).
