  • Peaceful woodland site in the Jumièges forest
  • Within walking distance of Jumièges and its famed abbey
  • Heated pool, snack bar, playground and free campervan service area
Verily, this is a rightly pretty tree-lined site. Traditional family park Camping de la Forêt in Upper Normandy is deep in a Seine-Maritime forest, surrounded by greenery, and viewsomely slap bang in the Boucles de la Seine Normande Natural Regional Park: try saying that after a Normandy Calvados or two… The forest is that of Jumièges, the woody expanse of Jumièges town, among quiet countryside in a meander of the Seine. The Seine valley, Normandy coast and flat colourful countryside for hiking, biking and horse riding are among your many outdoor options in the area; townwise, spectacular Rouen, a designated Town of Art and History, is 40 minutes' drive away. Camping de la Forêt is a friendly, peaceful and well-maintained place, with loads of space to wander or play. For more leisurely days, there's a swish heated pool with two waterslides for you and the sprogs to spend most of your time at, and an outdoor fitness area so you can keep your ripped physique in tiptop condition. Ping pong tables, tennis and a roomy playground should keep all ages occupied out of doors too… and if you get confuddled by your campervan or it needs some care and attention, a campervan service area is available for gratis use. The bar is open all day for snacks, ice cream and cold drinks; a small grocery shop sells produce from Jumièges and the region. Bread and pastries can be picked up in the morning if you order them the night before. A bakery, shops and restaurants are at the local village around 400 metres away.

Liked: Lovely welcome on arrival. Spacious pitches that are separated by trimmed hedges. Clean toilets. As there was no hot water, they offered WiFi for free which we appreciated.

Disliked: Unfortunately, no hot water which was reported to us on arrival as they were waiting for it to be fixed.

Fully-serviced grass pitch (comfort)

Liked: We went close to end of season so this represents that. Some things understandably were not available in terms of pool open etc but we knew that before going. Very friendly staff. We tried our French (this always helps) but the team spoke English. Pitch was big & level - we had our own water on the pitch & electric. Toilet blocks very clean - showers warm. Visit the local abbey - it’s magnificent & about 1 mile from site. There is a pizza place but you need to check door for opening hours - it was tasty. There is a grocery shop which has local produce - again check opening hours. Few places to eat out - check out the menus when walking around. Don’t forget most shops close at lunchtime. Good variety of walks & cycling - tourist centre can hire bikes from there.

Disliked: We wanted to take bus to Rouen. Speak to tourist information as not all buses stop in village. You also need to buy tickets in advance - check tourist office if they have some. Not sure if you can buy tickets on line (beyond our French to work this out). We were told that main bus for Rouen does stop in next villlage - about 1.5 mile along the road - we walked & got it to Rouen. There is a small mini market store in this village Yainville & has a large selection of goods. There is also nice wee bar too that we frequented after couple walks.

Liked: Warm welcome from hosts. Beautiful site, tranquil and relaxing. Lovely plunge pool and bar area. The shower facilities are excellent. Large, well spaced out and level pitches. Definitely a campsite to use as a base and chill out on. Look forward to a return visit. Next time we will get there early enough to order Friday night fish and chips. The town of Loches is not too far away and is a lovely vibrant place with an interesting chateau, restaurants, cafes and shops. We also had a trip to Monet’s garden at Giverny. Beautiful!

Local attractions

Local town Jumièges is most famed for its abbey, hailed by Mr Victor Hugo as 'the most beautiful ruins in France' (nothing miserable about his trip there, then). An abbey of some sort has stood here since the seventh century, in a pretty parkland setting above the Seine; in a later incarnation, the abbey was consecrated in the presence of William the Conqueror. Heading towards the Normandy coast (you really should), about an hour and a half will take you to Cabourg, on the Côte Fleurie and the coast of the English Channel. This swish town has been a popular Normandy seaside resort since the middle of the 19th century (and also has a writerly connection, as the oft-incomprehensible Marcel Proust was a fan of the sands here). Cabourg is famed these days for its art galleries and racecourse, casino and annual Romantic Film Festival: do go see. The handsome harbour town of Honfleur, with port painted by Monet, Courbet and others, is just over an hour away: do go see that aussi.
