  • Peaceful family park in the foodie Pays d'Auge area of Normandy
  • Calvados distillery, cider brewery and dairy farm tours nearby
  • Heated indoor pool and adults-only common room with billiards table
What a lush and laid-back countryside locale has Camping Les Pommiers: in fact, so bucolic and peaceful is this site’s location, near the historic village of Cormeilles, that it’s frequented occasionally by curious local deer. Set among Normandy’s Pays d'Auge area, you’re a mere 25 minutes’ pootle from the spectacular stretch of coastline that is the Côte Fleurie (aka Flowery Coast), plus many merveilleux water-based pursuits such as sailing, yachting, jetskiing, canoeing/kayaking and fishing are within easy reach at Pont l'Évêque's lake too. This is a fably family-friendly site set halfway between Caen and Rouen in an area that’s famed for its cider and calvados apple brandy production (tipple, anyone?), as well as that of cheeses like camembert, pont l'évêque and livarot... For day trips away to beaches and famed historic hotspots, the World War II’s Normandy Landing beaches are also around an hour's drive away for museums, commemorative festivals and, of course, sands, swims and watersports, so there’s plenty to do in the local and wider vicinity whatever flavour of stay guests might be seeking. The first place you’re likely to park yourself on site is by the heated indoor pool: plenty of deck chairs and loungers furnish its spacious terrace and, extra handily, the pool area also served by its own shower, cloakroom and toilet amenities, so thankfully, traipsing far from the poolside for comfort breaks or changing rooms isn’t a thing around here. Out of the pool and firmly on dry land, other fab leisurely options include outdoor games at the multi-sports pitch, as well as ping pong, table football and pétanque or – should grownups wish to take it a little easier indoors – the adults’-only games room with billiards table and free wifi access is a topping kid-free entertainment alternative. Meanwhile, littlies won’t at all mind being left to their own devices, as they’ll be far too busy with new pals partaking in fun antics at the playground, which is fitted with excellent kit like trampolines, a bouncy castle and an inflatable slide. And when all tuckered out and in need of a spot of R&R, guests can head back to their spacious and well laid-out pitch among the park’s pristine, shaded and superly serene two-and-a-half hectares for a barbecue, a tipple, a peaceful lie down or all of the above.

Local attractions

The Pays d'Auge area of Normandy is famed across the land for its production of cider, calvados, pommeau and cheese, and is thus a truly top spot for foodies to tour. Topping days out include trying tipples of calvados apple brandy and exploring the ageing cellars and museum at Busnel Distillery in nearby Cormeilles; wobbling one’s merry way along the Cider Route between Caen and Lisieux; and visiting the Graindorge cheese dairy in Livarot to sample locally produced camembert, pont l'évêque and livarot (prepare yourself for some rather vivd cheese dreams). Highly scenic local tours à la trot are on the cards around the site too, for as well as food and drink, the the Pays d'Auge is an equestrian heritage hotspot, so lots of stud farms and racecourses offering tours and horse riding excursions are around the area. For a spot of local culture or lake-based antics, round up the family and pack them carefully into the car for a trip out to the lively town of Pont l'Évêque, where there’s an award-winning lake that’s popular for swimming, fishing and watersports of all sorts including sailing, yachting, jetskiing, canoeing and kayaking. Also worth stopping off at for a look see around the town are its 15th-century church of Saint Michel, as well as a former convent that now showcases local events and contemporary art exhibitions, plus several cheese farms where you can learn about the age-old method of making the town’s cheesey namesake. History buffs will be able to find plenty of monuments within easy reach too, such as Château du Breuil, Domaine d'Harcourt, Château de Caen and the Basilica of St. Thérèse in Lisieux. Other sights and activities within 25 kilometres include the Clos de Chanchore gardens, Cerza Zoo, fishing at Calonne fish farm and nature spotting at the Vernier Marsh nature reserve.
