  • Shaded site on the banks of the Aube
  • Spectacular and peaceful setting around a 19th-century dovecot
  • Direct river access, canoe hire, playground and indoor lounge
A riverside site on a 19th-century French estate… sound boastful enough yet? Get ready to get smug with a stay at Domaine Le Colombier on the banks of the Aube, in the fizzingly fab region of Champagne-Ardenne. As you'll see from the pics, this is a lushly viewsome place, green and flower-filled with loads of room for stretching out and serious idling. And as you might gather from the name, there's a dovecot on site too: settle down beside it for a picnic to see how many pigeons you can spy flitting in and out of the colombier holes… Domaine Le Colombier is a mere minute's meander from the Aube department village of Dienville, in a Champagne-Ardenne setting between Paris and Strasbourg. It has direct access to the river for active days canoeing and swimming; hire a canoe from the team for serene hours drifting along the water. Facilities include a well-equipped playground with trampoline, along with an indoor lounge with TV, dartboard, table football and squishy sofas. Bakeries and restaurants are within easy strolling distance.

Electric optional grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: Location - in attractive village, with boulangerie and restaurants within 5-10 minutes’ walk. Good sized pitches, clean toilet blocks & cheerful welcome.

Disliked: Very soggy emplacements after rain - need blocks or treads to aid traction! Toilet block requires removal of one’s footwear on entry & use of sliders (provided). Water hose is at entry to site so could lead to congestion. Exit gate is code operated - if not working, must reverse back to entry gate! Emptying of waste water requires van to be half-in, half-out of exit gate which again could lead to congestion.

From the manager: Thanks for your review which enables me to clarify some points. We, unfortunatly, can't do anything against rain in winter except helping you not to get stuck in the pitch. It's the reason we propose wood planks. It also prevents damages to the pitches. There are 7 water points on the campsite and, yes, one at the entrance and one at the exit, but don't be afraid, if someone arrives while you refill before going to your pitch, it takes me longer to do their check-in than for you to refill. And as they are on holiday, they even won't mind waiting few minutes! The code at the exit gate enables us to prevent people from entering through the back of the campground. It's for your safety. No need to reverse, it works ! Or I'm here to open it for you ! Same for the grey water dumping area, it's a small campsite, not that much trafic. Usually people empty their black water tank and get rid of their trash while waiting for you to finish. If we had a huge campground we would for sure need to do it diferrently. But thanksfully we only have 44 pitches and this works perfectly until now. We hope it reassures you and hope to see you again at Le Colombier

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Perfectly situated on the banks of the Aube, virtually in the centre of the village. Sanitary area was modern and spotlessly clean. Large pitches with fibre broadband which was free. Don’t hesitate to book.

Disliked: Nothing.

Electric optional grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: This was probably the nicest campsite we’ve ever stayed at! It was very clean and well laid out - the toilets & showers were modern and very clean. The pitches were spacious and there was direct access to the river. Would 100% stay again and recommend to others!

Electric optional grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: Spotless modern facilities, the local area, friendly welcome, nice sized pitches set in lovely gardens growing herbs and roses. Cycling alongside the lake, local restaurants and village shops.

Disliked: The loud chiming church bells which disturbed our sleep. Please lovely owners, talk to the Priest and Marie to see if you can make the bells less intrusive during the night. This really spoilt the peace. Places to park whilst waiting to enter the campsite is tricky. A car, despite the spaces opposite, took the last motorhome space so we parked on the adjacent road, which is very narrow. As not everyone can time their journeys to the exact minute staggered entry times for customers would help, preventing queuing for entry and water and this information could be confirmed during the booking stage. We could not fill up with water on site as the water taps are press down, this then required a tight manoeuvre around the site to the entrance to fill up and in our case there was a queue with little room to park and wait. Suitable taps close to the pitches would cause less chaos. I would recommend this site to others, but for the reasons given above we probably wouldn’t stay here again due to disturbed sleep.

Excellent will definitely visit again.

Electric optional grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: Campsite super with a relaxing zen atmosphere.

Disliked: Washing up faculties in the same room as toilets and showers. Do understand removing shoes while using this area, but is a little annoying. Maybe in time have a small separate toilet block where boots are welcome!!!

Local attractions

The lush waters of the Aube are right to hand from the site for swimming, paddling and canoeing, but if you seek yet more watery times it's an easy 10-minute drive to the Aube reservoir and its two lakes, Amance and Temple. Make for Lac d'Amance for watersports including jetskiing and motorboating (this is the biggest watersports lake this close to Paris), and to Temple for birdwatching, fishing and a more peaceful vibe; motorboats aren't allowed on this part of the reservoir. The lakes are part of the woodland and water landscapes of the Orient Forest Regional Natural Park (Lac d'Orient, 25 minutes' drive from Domaine Le Colombier, is the park's third lake). A 42-kilometre bike path weaves through the trees around all three lakes for scenic rides, followed by a lengthy laze on one of the three sandy beaches of Lac d'Orient, the park's biggest. By car, Aube department capital and ancient town Troyes is 40 minutes' drive away, straight through the forest. Or give the kids a splendid day out by driving south for 15 minutes instead, to arrive at the Nigloland amusement park, one of the most visited in France.
