  • Eco-friendly lodges between the Poitou-Charentes and the Loire valley
  • Spa with hammam, saunas, whirlpool, plus massage and beauty treatments
  • Restaurant serving fine French cuisine like foie gras and fresh fish
Plonk your deserving self down here for an eco-friendly lodge stay between the Poitou-Charentes and the Loire valley: it’s set up smashingly for family stays of all sorts, with wellness treatments and warm watery areas, and has you within easy reach of lots of highly scenic hiking trails, as well as family attractions that include two amusement parks, a zoo and an aquarium. Relais du Plessis is an eco-friendly resort set among a lush green locale with lots in it to do – handily, a tourist information point is on site to help your sort your sightseeing highlights with ease, to topping spots like Chinon, for its château, wine road and canoeing and kayaking options, and the Château du Rivau for wanders around 14 spectacular landscaped gardens. The site stretches across five fab hectares and is filled with floods of free facilities to make for pleasant and fun-packed sojourns: a heated outdoor pool, ping pong, billiards (for a small fee), as well as guided hiking and mountain biking tours, beach volleyball, pétanque and badminton courts, and summer stuff for kids like outdoor activities, entertainment and sports tournaments. Several swish facilities are available for a supplement too: first off, for preens and pampers there’s the spa, where you can hole up in the hammam or treat your tired self to massage and beauty treatments across 10 splendid suites. Two saunas are also there to steam oneself at, and you can submerse your bod in the whirlpool to revive weary muscles. If you’re more of an active sort, then you may instead opt for lessons at the horse riding centre nearby, or rent a bike on site to pedal the surrounding countryside. A restaurant is also at guests’ disposal for refined evening dining options (foodies, think carpaccio beef, foie gras and fresh fish dishes), with several options for tiny peeps to munch on too. Its lounge bar area is set most spiffingly around a modern fireplace, so on cooler site days you can stay by the hearth sipping cocktails and mingling with other guests, or instead when climes are warmer, take your tipples away to partake in by the pool. If you’d rather make use of the kitchen in your lodge then two supermarkets are within walking distance (one’s gourmet, la-de-da), or for eats off site a pizza restaurant is nearby too.

Local attractions

Historic and cultural days will be plentiful around here should that be your holiday bent; closest to home, the site’s local town of Richelieu is a most splendid place to potter around à pied or vélo; also within easy reach, pedal out to Château du Rivau for a ramble around rose gardens and conservatories or, if feeling energetic, head further out to the former home of famed French literary Honoré de Balzac, at Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, or to the medieval riverfront Château de Chinon. And while on the subject of Chinon, a wine route starts here and runs all the way out to nearby Saumur: both are an easy pootle away from base, and should you be a self-professed wine connoisseur, then this is one local activity not to be missed. If instead you’re more of an outdoorsy soul, then it’s easy to spend days around the vicinity getting active en plein air: also in Chinon you can explore from a canoe or a kayak, or you can head over to putt your stuff at the golf course at Roiffé, not far from the park. If you’ve carted the kids over with you, they’re guaranteed to go giddy for the treetop adventure park at Saint Benoit la Foret, as well as for the rides of the film- and audiovisual attraction park of Futuroscope in Chasseneuil-du-Poitou. If they’re into animals, then whisk them off quick smart to the zoo at Doué la Fontaine, or to spy slimy sea critters at the aquarium in Loudun.
