  • Peaceful seaside site surrounded by coastal hiking and cycling trails
  • Douarnenez's four fishing ports 20 minutes' drive away
  • Set next to woodland and with direct access to Ty Anquer beach
Contemplating a trip to France’s Brittany region? Then how about a simple stay by the sea in fab Finistère? Set on the edge of a peaceful forest, three minutes’ amble to the golden sands of Ty Anquer beach via a path that takes you direct from the site, Camping de la Mer is set in Douarnenez Bay between Pointe du Raz and the Crozon Peninsula, and within super easy reach of 10 waymarked walking and cycling trails between nearby Ploéven and Ménez-Hom, including the GR 34, which meanders for over 1,800 spectacular kilometres along the beaut Brittany coastline. Flavie and Alexis have set up their spot by the sea serenely among lush landscaping filled with trees and flowering plants; the site is roomy and verdant, and guest accommodation areas are sheltered and provided with partial shade from high hedges. Leisure facilities here include a pétanque pitch, a playground and a games room, plus heaps of grass and woodland space for excitable littlies to hurtle around, plus frazzled grownups to bask, stroll and snooze in. If you’re looking for lots of entertainment in the way of organised activities, karaoke, sports tournaments and swimming pools, this likely isn’t going to be your bag. If, however, you’re looking for somewhere peaceful to return to for a restful slumber after long days filled with swimming and fishing from the beach or exploring hiking trails and lovely local villages – as well with as a friendly vibe and super helpful hosts – then you’ll be most pleased if you pitch up here. During high season there’s fresh bread delivery every morning, and the small site shop has a café attached, open a few evenings a week for entertainment in the way of folk song. The nearest big town of Douarnenez is 20 minutes away by car (or a two-and-a-half-hour coastal hike), and as it’s a fishing port, is a great spot to pick up fresh fish to sizzle on the barbecue before settling back under the starry night sky.

Liked: Lovely small campsite with familiar feel within easy walking distance to local fantastic beach & costal path. Nice bar serving drinks and snacks, weekly crepe evening which is a nice touch. Large tent near reception to sit in the dry and use Wifi. Lots of different accommodation options on campsite which look lovely (and dry in the wet weather). Plenty and different things to do within easy driving distance.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: We stayed for 6 nights with our small campervan and a sun shelter tent… Camping de la mer is just great! Absolutely nice team, who are always friendly and patiently helping with all questions. For the evenings there is the possibility to eat and have a drink, even a crepes-party once a week, when we stayed. Although there must have been a lot of rain, the washrooms were always clean and neat this year. There us also a bigger tent with tables to sit, when the weather is not so nice. There is a washing machine, and several hand wash places and a very big freezer. The beach is great, the children loved to surf, there is hiking and biking possibilities around…hardly any stones in the water, really nice! Also nice to visit Crozon (sport store there, great patisserie and crepes, nice small indoor swimming pool ) and many other places around. Nice and quiet, a real camping experience.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Very friendly and helpful owners. Facilities kept spotlessly clean despite deluges of rainfall. Excellent location: lovely beach and cliffs 10mins walk, everything do see and do within Finistere up to 1hr drive. Terrace and petanque area laid back and bustly in the evening. Good, safe play area and campsite for the kids.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Relaxed and friendly camping with some very French atmosphere. Evening drinks and boules but no organised entertainment. Mostly French campers , but very welcoming. Amazingly clean toilets and showers despite weather. Near a huge beach and loads of walking routes.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike. If you want a load of organised entertainment this is not the site for you.

2 bedroom safari tent

From the neighbouring beach guests can swim in the sea, go diving and fishing for gilt-head sea bream from the rocks, or settle down by the sea to construct complex sandcastles. Take the tiddlers to see Brest’s aquarium stocks (including seven shark species), or to Douarnenez’s four harbours and maritime museum next to Port-Rhu, to play skipper on the five historic sea vessels docked there. Also within easy reach are activities like sea kayaking, yachting, paragliding, horse riding and hiking.
