Quick, get along to Finistère's Camping du Quinquis if you want a Brittany break near the beach, in a peaceful area with loads to do for small sorts. This big and amicable family-friendly site is near the town of Clohars-Carnoët, a couple of kilometres from the beaches of Le Pouldu and Kérou, and a paltry half kilometre from the Quinquis animal park, a beaut space where you can wander freely among the furry inhabitants (have a day here, it's well worth it). And how might you fancy a moonlight swim...? Splashing around under the night sky is one of du Quinquis's many activities on site in summer, along with the likes of aqua gym classes, sports tournaments and a kids' club on weekday mornings. You can hire adult and kids' bikes to cycle around the site, to the beach or on the local forest trails; within a few minutes, jetski lessons and a surf school are a couple of kilometres away at Kérou and Le Pouldu. Du Quinquis is a sociable and lively site, with all sorts of facilities to sort a family holiday: as well as the pile of activities, you could have a daytime dip in one of the two pools while the kids check out the paddling pool, or tackle tennis, basketball, football, pétanque and ping pong at the sports areas. Also on site is a mini market with bread service, a takeaway and a friendly lively bar with terrace and yet more evening entertainment, including quiz nights, board game tournaments, live music and karaoke. The clean, modern amenities block has showers, toilets and a launderette with washing machines and tumble dryers.

Local attractions

Next door to the critters first: Quinquis animal park is a scenic space filled with botanical gardens, a lake, 14 springs and oak trees centuries old – along with animal inhabitants including deer, donkeys, ponies, pigs, wallabies and lemurs; pick up some bread at the park entrance to see which of them you can tempt to dinner. Sands are simple to get to next, with the beaches and clear waters of Le Pouldu and Kérou both two kilometres away. If you want to get out into the water under supervision, a surfing school is in Kérou and jetski lessons in Le Pouldu. (Le Pouldu's also the place to rock up to for boat trips to the excellent Ile de Groix.) Also actively, a horse riding centre is five kilometres away, canoe trips can be arranged from Quimperlé within 10 kilometres and golf courses are about 15 kilometres away. You could also stroll around the beech woods of the Bois d'Amour just outside arty Pont-Aven 15 kilometres away, the source of inspiration for many a painter type on wanders here from the town. Other options are Pont-Scorff Zoo (12 kilometres), the submarine base at Lorient (20 kilometres) and the fishing port of Concarneau, 30 kilometres away.
