The site lies close to three sizeable cities too (Limoges, Périgueux and Angoulême), all about an hour’s drive away. Set among forest and farmland, Camping La Bucherie’s green environs are spot on for rural retreats, countryside ambles, nature spotting and birdwatching; these lands are home to 25 varieties of rare orchid, more than 40 different animal species including European pine martens, otters, dormice and fire salamanders, and 110 different types of feathered critter. This small family site in the Dordogne department and in the Périgord Limousin Regional Natural Park is a highly restful place, where options include peaceful rambles in the forest to forage for mushrooms, truffles and chestnuts; swims in the smart new pool or wandering to the nearby swimming lake for fresh dips on hot days. Kids are kept well occupied too in the summer months, when a club runs activities like craft workshops – where they’ll learn to craft bows and arrows, dreamcatchers and other homemade holiday souvenirs – and organised outdoor games, drama workshops and nature walks through the surrounding woodland. Eats for all ages are sorted over at the bistro and bar, which serves up dishes, tipples and a kids’ menu. Take to the bar terrace in the evenings, to gather round the big communal firepit and have a natter with your fellow guests.

The swimming lake a short walk away is lifeguarded during the summer months and has shower and toilet facilities. If the sound of exploring the water in a canoe appeals instead, then head to the Dronne river nearby: for those who rather like the idea of being guided by knowledgeable locals, the site runs regular outings there during the summer. For adrenalised adventure, take yourself and the kids to Espace Hermeline a short drive away, where brave types of all ages can test their steel among the high ropes courses. If heights aren't your thing, take the opposite approach and head underground to the Villars cave, to tour fab grottoes hewn over centuries by an underground river and filled with stalactites and stalagmites. Limoges is a splendid spot to wander around for a city day trip: must-sees include the Musée des Beaux Arts, the Jardin de l'Évêché botanical gardens and the historic pedestrianised Rue de la Boucherie. Périgueux has a fine mix of Renaissance and medieval architecture, a Roman site and a UNESCO-listed Byzantine cathedral.
