  • Family-friendly site in the Périgord Noir region
  • Half an hour from the Lascaux Caves and 55 minutes from Bergerac
  • Fishing lake, heated pools, kart hire, play area, shop and snack bar
Châteaux of the Périgord region... or the area's prehistoric sites? As the Camping Le Val de la Marquise team points out, this little site is niftily placed to explore rather splendid samples of both. Its Dordogne setting between Le Bugue and Les Eyzies is within simple distance of Périgord places like the National Museum of Prehistory and the Sorcier cave, each under 10 minutes' drive, and the châteaux of Beynac and Castelnaud each within 30. The world-famed Lascaux Caves are also close by... or you could opt to investigate French culture and tobacco instead with a meander around brill Bergerac. And what a smashing site this is for family adventures too. Peruse the pics above to get a flavour of the many activities and facilities on offer at this friendly place, from pedal kart hire for the kids to a library to retreat to indoors. Activities including live music run in July and August. All ages are catered for on site: there's a kids' club (in a tipi) and a big play area with bouncy castle for small sorts, and a games room, sports court and a pool area for all sizes. You can cast off for sizeable sturgeon at the pond too, or idle around on the sandy spot alongside. A snack bar, bread and pastry delivery service and a shop with local produce are also on offer, along with further facilties and amenities including a launderette, a baby bathroom and wifi.

Local attractions

All prepped for your Périgord, prehistoric and Dordogne adventures? There's quite a lot to pick from... Delving into the prehistoric side of things, make your first stop the little town of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Vézère valley, acclaimed worldwide as the centre of the Dordogne's ancient past. The National Museum of Prehistory is here, along with Abri Pataud, a Cro-Magnon shelter dating back 40,000 years. Just outside town and beside the prehistoric shelter of Laugerie-Basse is the spectacular Grotte du Grand Roc, a huge cave halfway up a cliff overlooking the Vézère river. From there, drive north (35 minutes from Camping Le Val de la Marquise), for the 6,000 or so cave paintings of Lascaux, or stay closer to home with a look at the caves of Combarelles and Font de Gaume, both 10 minutes away. The team also recommends the recreated village of Bournat, set up to look like a traditional Dordogne settlement of around 1900, and the Aquarium du Périgord noir and its alligator park, both five minutes from the site. For something a tad more active, the leisure centre at Bos lakes is 10 to 15 minutes' drive south.
