Avatar House Camping is in the Cocles area of Puerto Viejo, in the Limón region of southern Costa Rica. Designed and decorated to evoke the characters and landscapes of the movie Avatar, it's in a tropical forest just 15 minutes' walk from the beach and Caribbean Sea. There's a back-to-nature feeling here, but with showers and free wifi available for modern comforts. You can swim in the adjacent river, hire bikes and join excursions on foot or horseback straight from the site, all in a rainforest location where you'll often see toucans, hummingbirds, frogs, lizards, monkeys, butterflies and fireflies among others. The Caribbean coast is not far away and has several beaches for swimming, surfing and relaxing, including a stunning black sand beach. You can also visit two protected wildlife areas within 20 kilometres, and see rescued animals at the Jaguar Rescue Center.

Local attractions

Hire bikes on site or join one of the excursions on foot or horseback to explore the surrounding rural area. The laidback town of Puerto Viejo is four kilometres away and has lots of colourful houses, restaurants and a spectacular black sand beach. Playa Cocles, a kilometre away, is a great surfing beach, while Playa Punta Uva, five kilometres away, is calmer and more suited to swimming and snorkelling. You'll find great hiking trails and more wildlife spotting iin Gandoca-Manzanillo National Refuge, 10 kilometres away, and Cahuita National Park, 20 kilometres north. Learn about making chocolate and taste some samples from the bean-to-bar chocolate maker CariBeans, three kilometres away. Despite its name, on a tour of the Jaguar Rescue Center two kilometres away, you'll see all sorts of rescued animals including monkeys, sloths, snakes and birds.
