  • Eco-friendly farm site with views of the Turrialba volcano
  • An hour from hikes, swimming and fishing in Tapantí National Park
  • Horse riding, rafting, mountain biking and tours arranged on site
Fancy greeting a glass frog, tangling with a violaceous trogon or crossing paths with a jaguarondi? Such fantastic beasts might sound the stuff of myths, but you can see them all from a base at Hacienda Monte Claro. This family-run farm site in Costa Rica’s Cartago province is a special place: a biological corridor where coffee, sugar cane, arable land and livestock are farmed in harmony with the surrounding ecosystems of rivers, valleys and rainforests. Open eco-deck lodgings give wide views over the 350-hectare estate and towards the Turrialba volcano, and like the farm, the facilities are designed to have as little impact on the environment as possible. The water in the bathroom is heated naturally, and since there’s no electricity, the lighting at night comes from solar lamps. You may find it hard to tear yourself away from the views, but it’s worth taking up an invitation to spend time on the farm. Everyone can join in washing the pigs, grooming the horses and collecting eggs, or take tours of the coffee plantations and cane fields to see how the crops are grown and processed into the stuff we take for granted. The proprietors can also arrange activities in the area, including horse treks into the lush Reventazón basin, whitewater rafting on the Río Pacuare and mountain biking through the hills. When you need refuelling, restaurants, bars and shops are 15 minutes’ drive away in Turrialba.

Local attractions

Whether it’s for refreshing dips at the end of a trek or for a whole day of downtime, Angostura lake is 10 minutes’ drive away and an excellent spot for swimming, watersports and waterside walks. Once refreshed, make the 50-minute trip to the Guayabo National Monument, a hilltop site that was once the centre of a thriving civilisation. Between 3,000 and 600 years ago, a complex city of 10,000 souls lived up here, then vanished for reasons still not clear. After tours round the mysterious site, take a stroll round the farmers’ market in the nearby town or visit the colourful residents of the butterfly farm. To see more local colour, including the luminous jade coloured glass frogs, make tracks to Tapantí National Park an hour away: it’s a compact zone of cloud and rainforests, ravines, pools and waterfalls, with many hiking trails that end in a swim. Trout fishing is possible with permits, and you’re probably more likely to land a whopper than spot an elusive, cat-sized jaguarondi. Even so, the park is chock full of exotic wildlife, such as tapirs and armadillos, quetzals, ocelots… and, yes, violaceous trogons, too (they're a type of parrot, but of course you knew that...).
