  • Peaceful green site next to a natural pond
  • Near hiking/biking trails, vineyards and Styrian restaurants
  • Modern facilities including sauna, playground and spotless amenities
Who's up for a peaceful stay in the green and hilly landscape of Styria's south-west? Right next to an award-winning natural pond with facilities for beach volleyball, beach basking and other leisurely pursuits, so you can get as active or lazy as you like without having to stir too far from your scenic Austrian base? Sensible sorts should say Ja to this Styrian holiday, at Sulmtal Camping near Pölfing-Brunn in the district of Deutschlandsberg. The family team members here are fans of outdoor stays themselves, so are well versed in what a site should have to keep guests comfy and well occupied. The smart amenities are spotless (see pics) and heated, have free hot water and are accessible to disabled guests. The focal point of the site – well, apart from the comely little lake and its assorted activities – is the communal guesthouse, with comfy seating areas, armfuls of tourist info on the region, and a swish wellness centre with sauna and sun loungers to soak up warmth even in the colder months. Outdoors, there's loads of green space all around on which to loaf or play. Barbecues are allowed: source the necessaries at Pölfing-Brunn about 10 minutes' walk away, which has a supermarket as well as other handy stopoffs including a café, a beer garden and a pizza place. Traditional dishes both hot and cold, along with local wine and several small inns (mostly family-run) are all in the vicinity.

Electric optional grass pitch

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Quiet site with small number of pitches - there are a number of "permanent" caravans on site but the locals seem super friendly and welcoming. The site includes a small swimming lake, volleyball net, and little bar. Each pitch comes with access to water and electricity, and the facilities (toilets / showers) are exceptionally clean. There is even a little honesty stall where you can buy oil, butter, bacon etc, and a bakery van that turned up on site in the morning selling breads and pastries.

Disliked: We didnt realise that the reception would only be open between 8-9am, and 6-7pm so had to wait to check in. However there was a number which we called and the owner arrived within 10 mins.

Local attractions

Among this spectacular scenery are many clearly marked trails leading to top spots in the Schilcherland region of Styria, around dense forests and pumpkin fields, flowery meadows and the peaks of the Koralpe, the famed mountain range extending south into Slovenia to make up the biggest winter sports resort in the south-east Alps. The site also has direct access to the Sulmtalradweg, a peaceful route from Kaindorf to Deutschlandsberg via Heimschuh, Wippelsach, Gleinstätten, St. Martin and Moss. Its 46-kilometre run has a range of different sections, all suitable for family rides and easy to pedal even on scorching days as they pass through dense forest. Tennis courts, riding stables, fishing spots, an outdoor pool and a mining museum are all nearby in Pölfing-Brunner. The Sulmtal team also thoroughly recommends wanders through the local landscape to investigate as many Schmankerl (regional delicacies) as possible, such as Schilcher, Kernöl (pumpkin seed oil) and schnapps. For day trips or moving to the next scenic stage of your trip, you can reach the cultural city of Graz in about an hour, Klagenfurt on beaut Wörthersee lake in an hour and a half, the Slovenian border in 20 minutes and the Slovenian capital Ljubljana in two hours.
