Make free and easy at the relaxed Sychpwll Centre on the banks of the river Vyrnwy, where you’ll find a wide range of options on offer: ready-pitched bell tents for hassle-free holidays, a straw bale camping barn for groups of 10-20, a heated log cabin with a private veranda and garden, and the Crow’s Nest, a self-catering one bedroom flat. There are of course standard tent pitches too in the five-acre camping field, where all sizes of tent are accepted and where you can pick your own pitch (weather permitting) and park your car alongside.

Sychpwll is an eco-friendly smallholding that’s grown organically over the past 30 years, and uses ‘leave no trace’ camping as a major policy, where guests are asked to dispose of their waste and recycling in a responsible manner. Leaving no trace is also essential when building campfires, as these must be off the ground so as not to scorch the grass: if you’re planning on having a fire, be Boy or Girl Scout prepared and bring a suitable container or brazier with you. Wood is available to buy on site.

If it’s too wet for a campfire, the friendly owners will fire up the Rayburn in the straw bale kitchen and have boiling water ready, so you can dry off or get a morning cuppa if you want it before getting ready for a day exploring the Welsh countryside.

Nearby attractions and activities

Based a mile from where the unpolluted River Vrynwy meets the River Severn, Sychpwll is cosy in winter and normally with a good climate in summer. It’s also on a leyline, which is said to contribute to its ‘magical and calming atmosphere’, and there’s more than enough to do to keep everyone happy all year round, with those coming for walking or cycling holidays particularly spoilt for choice.

The hiking in this area gives world-class views, such as the famous Offa’s Dyke or one of the three routes to the landmark Rodney’s Pillar. Visitors can also take a stroll to the local farmers’ market or nearby Lake Vrynwy, or try their hands at one of the many activities nearby, including climbing, fishing, horse-riding and watersports. Or, for those who like to hit a ball as hard as possible, tennis is available in town and there’s a golf course within half an hour’s drive.

Taking it a bit easier, the site is between the market towns of Welshpool and Oswestry, around seven miles from each, with shopping till you drop, and there are plenty of days out at local attractions such as historic (and pink) Powis Castle and puffing along on the Welshpool to Llanfair Light Steam Railway. Culture vultures can go slightly further afield to Ludlow and Shrewsbury 13 miles away, where there are opportunities for festivals, arts events and nights on the town.

Liked: We booked this site due to the reviews and the dog friendly comments. I was walking from Barmouth to Wolverhampton over the course of the bank holiday weekend in May 2013 and we needed base camp. Jason was super welcoming, super friendly and we basically had the place to ourselves.
Although our first time camping the facilities especially those lovely hot showers were brilliant on my tired muscles when walking my 8 dogs for the ...

Disliked: I think they were doing some helicopter practicing overhead on a few nights - in bed early for early start! Nothing that the campsite could do about it!

I think maybe a sign or two on the corners of the fields perhaps done by the wood craft man on the 2nd turning and at the turn after bridge would help folks if they did not use the instructions on the campsite website which are the most ...

Staying in the crows nest with our dog looking over lovely views!

Liked: I liked the fact there was plenty of space to walk the dog and roam the land especially seeing the swans on the nearby river :)
The crows nest was small but with everything you needed (although a laptop or i pod etc is essential) know one disturbed us and it was very peaceful would definately go again. It had everything we needed for our dog which was one of the reasons we choose here :)

Disliked: It was cold the small heater we had just wasn't enough think maybe that was the time of year aswell it would be lovely and cool in the summer months.

Liked: We liked the personal touch that this campsite offers. We were all (including our dogs) made to feel at home from our first day and the owners checked that everything was ok during our stay.

There was plenty of room/privacy between pitches which meant that we could enjoy our dinner and evenings by the campfire without interruption/disruption from other campers.

We also enjoyed the surrounding area which offers a variety of different walks ...

Disliked: There was not anything that we disliked about our camping trip (a part from one wet day ; )).

I would go again as the toilets were to a high standard, the showers were great, not like some you get where they just dribble out, they were nice and hot just like having a shower at home. The kids had fun running round they can't go far and it was quite safe for them to go and explore. The kids loved the horse always going to see him.

The site allows BBQ and camp fires and they don't make a big fuss over ...

Disliked: The weather wasn't great as it rained but this can not be helped in the UK. Could not fault the centre. The only feedback I would give is to put up more signs to the centre as it's not an easy one to find and the Sat Nav doesnt take you to the right location. Saying that if you ring the staff they will direct you and are really helpful.

Liked: Myself and my fellow campers thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the manager of the site was nothing but helpful and welcoming and all that was asked of us was to respect the site and our 'neighbors'. The site itself was well maintained and the shower/toilet facilities were clean and tidy. The surrounding welsh countryside was beautiful and not too far away were some lovely pubs and local shops.

Get directions

Your satnav will get you lost: please read the directions below...

The nearest train station is Shrewsbury, followed by Gobowen or Welshpool.

There is a bus service from Shrewsbury bus station with Tanat Valley Coaches. D74 service runs approx every three hours Mon-Sat. If you get off at Llandrinio bridge traffic lights the centre is about one mile from here.

There is a local taxi service in the village and if you prefer Chris' Cabs (01691 831023) will happily collect you from the train station.

Directions to Sychpwll Centre.

From London

Take the M1 and then the M6 towards Birmingham but do not join the toll section. Keep on the main M6 and then exit on the M54 towards Telford. Keep on this motorway until it becomes the A5 towards Oswestry and North Wales. After a series of roundabouts look out for the A458 to Welshpool and turn left. Continue down the A458 for a couple of miles and turn right at the B4393 towards Llandrinio and Lake Vyrnwy.

After just over 7 miles you will come to a set of traffic lights just before a hump back bridge over the River Severn. Turn right immediately after the bridge. The signpost says Haughton. The first turning on the right signs to Haimwood but keep on the main lane and after just under a mile take the second turning on the right. This narrow lane is not signed but look out for the telegraph pole. If you pass a sign on the left to Rhos Common you have just overshot the lane! Drive down the lane and follow the tarmac as it turns sharp right. At the end of the lane drive though a clump of trees and you have arrived.

Best wishes and safe journeys.
