  • Peaceful Pembrokeshire site with stables five mins' drive from Solva
  • A 10-minute drive from St Davids, Newgale and Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Bring your horse and hack to the beach
Giddy up and get down to this splendid spot on the Pembrokeshire coast. They're fond of horses at Birtwick Park: it's an equestrian smallholding where you can stay under the stars while your horse friend has a comfortable night in the stables. It's not obligatory to bring an equestrian accomplice of course; everyone is welcome (including well-behaved dogs) to come and enjoy the views of the hills and the coast on this green and peaceful site, five minutes' drive from the little harbour at Solva. Stargazers and birdwatchers should be particularly happy here, as the night skies are massive and clear while pheasants and barn owls make themselves heard around the fields. Gazing down to the ground for practicalities, you can park where you stay and borrow firepits for sizzling your bangers on; if you don't fancy cowboy cooking Solva has many fine pubs with hot grub and shops for stocking up. Solva is also where walkers can join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, 680 miles of fine terrain encountering castles, moorlands and weathered cliffs teeming with wildlife. Try a modest section walking round to Newgale beach, with a paddle and pint among the surfers as your just reward.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful area to explore, decent size pitches

Disliked: Never seen the owner, just told which pitch to pitch on via email, site needs maintenance/ investment but ok for basic camping

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Honestly, I really hadn’t realised you had come to see me! You really should have brought wine!! Or at least mentioned it during one of the many telephone conversations we had to make changes your booking! We never claim to be anything other than a basic camping, with quality toilets/showers and electrical hookup. Other more commercial campsites are available in the area with additional facilities… and they charge accordingly.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: space for car next to tent Clean toilets and wash area Option for fire pit and log hire Quiet space Great fellow campers! All came together when got hit by the storm checking everyone was okay. Close to Newgale and solva village. In Haverfordwest there are supermarkets and some shops which are better than local as very expensive.

Disliked: Small field felt cramped when full Fire pit was broken didn't feel safe We were hit by storm would have been nice to be checked on after but never even saw anyone even other campers were asking if we had seen someone. We gave fellow campers fire Wood ect as no one at reception. Extremely rude signs up everywhere we were made to feel very unwelcome.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Great location and a nice walk too. Solva and some local pubs. Great spacing of pitches. Left to your own devices upon arrival and departure. Very quiet. A great view at night full of stars with no light pollution. Lovely sun sets

Disliked: The site could really do with a bit of TLC. The entrance has a lot of pot holes that need filling in. It had rained a lot on arrival, so there was a lot of mud and water puddles needing to be navigated around. The hard standing pitches just need to be tidied up - pull out the weeds and make the borders a bit more proud. The bins should be hidden and not close to the water outlet - just seems a bit unhygienic. Also more bins are needed? They were over flowing and there were a lot of flies! The male bathroom needs a bit more thinking about - you’re unable to place a change of clothes anywhere in the shower blocks. So you end up showering and battling a puddle from drowning your change of clothes. There was a lot of mud that had been walked into the bathrooms - regular cleaning would easily resolve this. Only two toilets too for the male and female toilets - often led to quite a large queue from other camp site members. The water temperature fluctuates a lot. Often leads to cold showers and cold washing up water - not ideal. I also opted to rent a log burner for the weekend. Was a bit disappointed to find it was quite a well rusted fire pit. Also really unsure why you get charged extra a night for a dog - the camp site provides nothing extra for the dog, so seems like they’re monopolising on this for the sake of it? This cannot be helped in anyway shape or form - but the lanes are very narrow and twice found myself face to face with another car, so be careful!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The view of the horses

Disliked: Pitches are too close to each other, over flowing bins and horses fields full of ragwort. Didn’t even see the owners. Very basic facilities.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The site is a farm field with electric hook ups. Panoramic views and fields each side with horses. Facilities are adequate and clean.

Disliked: The drive from the main road is basically single track with few passing places. We stopped three nights with a Motorhome and fortunately didn’t meet any other traffic

Liked: Horses

Disliked: Hard ground and lack of interaction from owner. Also horses escaped In. The night and the owners didn't even know until one of the people staying on site told them mid day. And I asked for water to be given to horses

Local attractions

Two splendid Pembrokeshire seaside spots are within five minutes' drive: the fab surf beach of Newgale, a spectacular two-mile stretch edged by an enormous pebble bank, and Solva, home to a scenic harbour with shops, pubs and kayak and canoe hire. There are plenty of picnic places at both, particularly at Newgale where the solitary-minded can stroll all the way down to the beach's southern end and through a cave to a cluster of sheltered bays. Another Pembrokeshire must-see is tiny St Davids, the smallest city in the UK. Have a day here to see its famed cathedral founded in the sixth century and the 13th-century Bishops Palace next door, then book a boat trip to fab Ramsay Island for seal spotting and birdwatching. If you still yearn for sea and surf, one of the most acclaimed surfing beaches in Pembrokeshire, Whitesands Bay, is a couple of miles to the west of St Davids. Pembrokeshire's three theme parks are within easy day trip distance too: Oakwood Theme Park is 40 minutes' drive away, Folly Farm 45 and Heatherton within 50.
