Ty Gwyneth Romany Caravan
FavouriteWe’ve lots of tiny campsites here at Pitchup.com. (And small, and medium, and stonkingly big too; we like to mix it up.) The peace, the quiet, the brewing your tea of a morning with the only sounds the twittering of birds, the singing of the kettle and your other half still snoring…There’s a lot to be said for getting away from hordes of people and pitching up on one of our teeny tiny sites.
And it doesn’t get much tinier than at Ty Gwyneth Romany Caravan, where, with one restored gypsy wagon on site, guests are guaranteed to be in glorious solitude after making the ten-minute journey from Bridgend train station or following the duck – yes, really – on the brown sign opposite the nearby Fountain Inn.
The wanderful wagon once roamed the lanes of Perthshire and was then bought for the owner’s children for sleepovers and parties. Now put restfully to grass, the Romany caravan sits in a private garden overlooking the owners’ beef and sheep farm, and is available for travellers along its route or to use as a base for trips to Cardiff, Swansea or the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Although this is a traditional gypsy wagon, the amenities are fully 21st century – there’s a loo, hot shower and kitchen kit just a step away, and guests will even have wifi, definitely not known as a staple of wanderers all those decades ago. And if you don’t want to microwave your meals, the caravan also comes with a barbecue and a log burner patio set so you can make breakfast well away from the dulcet tones of your snoring other half.
Nearby attractions and activities
Ty Gwyneth has the best of all worlds, tucked away in a spot of solitude, but just 19 miles from capital city Cardiff and 20 from maritime city Swansea.
Browse around Cardiff for some essential retail therapy (the city was voted sixth best in the UK for shoppers), catch some sport at the Millennium Stadium, go all artsy at the Wales Millennium Centre Arts Complex or gawk at Cardiff Castle in the middle of the city. For Swansea, there’s Liberty Stadium, buying Welshcakes at Swansea Market, over 20 nature reserves in and around the city and, naturally, some more shopping – the main shopping hub in Swansea is getting a £1 billion facelift in 2012.
The Brecon Beacons National Park is just 26 miles away, with a wealth of stuff to see and do including steaming along on the Brecon Mountain Railway, going underground at the coal mine Big Pit, cruising the canal at Goytre Wharf, or just taking in the park’s nature, wildlife and many walks.
Closer to the caravan, guests can be at the sands of Porthcawl within 15 minutes or Southerndown in 20, or sliding down the sand dunes at the wildlife habitat Merthyr Mawr three miles from Bridgend. The 'Golden Coast', on the westerly part of the nearby Glamorgan Heritage Coast, has a surf academy and scuba diving school in its watersports centre of Porthcawl.
In Bridgend town, sporty folk can cheer on the local rugby team the Bridgend Ravens at the Brewery Field, while those who like their music loud will find several small venues in and around the town centre playing host to up and coming local acts.
Smaller campers in the area can kick back at the South Wales Karting Centre, swing the trees like Tarzan at Port Talbot’s Go Ape!, swing the playground at the Rumble in the Jungle indoor play centre at Rhondda, or ride the waves at the huge indoor pool at Bridgend Recreation Centre.

Great stay Cecile W. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: - the caravan of course! the beding was more comfortable that what I was expecting and the duvet very worm and comfi. Just be aware that the bed is not very long, I am 174cm and I was fitting just about when lying on my back. Disliked: Nothing much, the few point bellow are more details and thing that could be improved: |

A really nice short break. Thank you. Didcott (Family with older children, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: We were welcomed with fresh flowers in the kitchen and home made cakes delivered by the owner. Disliked: There was nothing to dislike, but we could have done with a tin opener, when the planned BBQ was rained off. |
