  • Peaceful site in the Brecon Beacons, 10 minutes' drive from Llandeilo
  • 20 minutes' walk from Carreg Cennen Castle
  • Well-stocked fishing lake for experienced anglers, kids and beginners
Fishing folk – are you up for a challenge? Legend has it that somewhere in the lake at Trapp Fishery Caravan and Camping lurks a mirror carp weighing more than 25lb. No one’s managed to hook the elusive beastie so far… could it be you? Even if you don’t manage to catch this whopper, there’s plenty more to cast around for in these waters, including bream, tench, mirror carp and common carp (some of which have come in at around the 20lb mark). Beginners and kids may have more luck with the smaller silverfish, and can have lessons to pick up some techniques. Should you not fancy fishing at all, the peaceful pitches here still make a smashing base for exploring south Wales. A footpath leads from the site up to hilltop Carreg Cennen Castle and beyond into the Breacon Beacons National Park, and the beaches of the Gower Peninsula and Carmarthen Bay are around 45 minutes away by car. Facilities on site are kept fairly minimal to preserve the rural vibe, but there’s a toilet block and plenty of picnic tables on which to serve up your meals. The friendly local pub is a five-minute trot away for pints and pub grub, or you could drive into Llandeilo, 10 minutes away, for more pubs, restaurants and takeaways.

Lakeside electric hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked: This is a basic pitch with excellent facilities. Situated by a fishing lake it is very quiet especially at night. We were met by Ian who is very engaging and down to earth. He was very helpful and obliging. We took our electric bikes and found lots of lovely quiet country roads to cycle with some very nice pubs for refreshments. A very enjoyable stay.

Disliked: Better recycling needed.

Castle View electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Friendly site, peaceful, great views of the castle, very dog friendly. We had “castle view” pitch which was quite flat and electric close. New toilet/showers/washing up black almost finished and being used looks good with views over lake.

Disliked: This is the sort of site we love, but might not be your sort of thing? Also, Sat Nat route a little tricky and stiles on walking routes mean you will likely need to lift your dog over them if you have one to walk. I’ve marked the site suitability for children low as the lake is open as is the close enterance to the site is by road, although very quiet one.

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Me and my partner stayed for 2 nights in the camping pod, Ian was really helpful and showed us around when we arrived, the toilet and showers were all clean and had been newly built, unfortunately we didnt have the best weather as it rained all weekend but inside the pod was really warm it was clean and was a perfect position next to the lake to fish, we will definitely be back.

Disliked: Nothing

Yurt (no pets)

Liked: Lovely location and shower block spotlessly clean. Owners lovely

Disliked: Not dislikes but tips....Stayed in the yurt and was disappointed to not have an allocated fishingnpeg near the yurt. Double bed needs to be slightly raised off the floor as found it damp, a few pallets would do the job. More gravel should be added in front of the yurt as was very very muddy. Also some hooks in the showers would be useful and a mirror in the small toilet

Lakeside electric gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: The pretty location. The owners were friendly and invited us to use some of the herbs for food and drinks.

Disliked: They are still in the process of finishing up the facilities. They are clean and easily accessible (just needs a hand towel in the toilet). The website said near the pub, but the one mentioned hasn't been open for years so it is a car trip to Llandeilo for a drink or food. It would have been good to know that on the first night as hadn't prepared food.

Local attractions

The Brecon Beacons National Park is a smashing place for a walk or few: start by hitting the path from the site up to 13th-century Carreg Cennen Castle – the 20-minute walk finishes with a steep climb but it’s worth it for the fab views from the top of the hill. Elsewhere around the park are heaps more walks for all fitness levels, along with mountain bike trails, horse riding, caving, watersports and aerial adventures. If you like your walks a little more sedate, try Aberglasney Gardens and the National Botanic Gardens of Wales (both within a half-hour drive), or you could take a wander around Dinefwr Castle, just outside Llandeilo (15 minutes’ drive away). For a blast of sea air, it’ll take you around 45 minutes to drive to the wide sands of Llansteffan beach, or the gorgeous eight-mile stretch of Cefn Sidan in Pembrey Country Park. The Gower Peninsula and the seaside resort of Tenby are both around an hour’s drive away.
