  • Friendly farm stay on a smallholding 2.5 miles from Laugharne
  • 15 minutes from spectacular Carmarthenshire/Pembrokeshire beaches
  • Stargazing haven with campfires allowed
You'll certainly want to wax lyrical when you arive at this lush little site. Two and a half miles from Dylan Thomas's house at Laugharne, Big Barn Camping is a cracking Carmarthenshire site in a wildlife haven where red kites and other birds of prey regularly soar overhead. There's stacks of space to stroll about here: the site is on a Georgian farm covering 36 acres of meadows and woodland (and home to sheep, pigs, alpacas, goats, chickens and waterfowl to say hi to during your stay). The views are splendid, looking out over the countryside by day and stars aplenty at night against the flames of your fire; Big Barn is in a stargazing haven and campfires are allowed. Off site, it's two and a half miles or under 10 minutes' drive to the coastal town of Laugharne, famed as the final home of Dylan Thomas, 15 minutes to Pendine Sands and 20 to Carmarthen; it's also within 20 minutes of Pembrokeshire beaches at Amroth and Saundersfoot. Walks around Laugharne and the estuary of the River Taf are popular picks for local wanders. The site is eco friendly, using solar power, compost toilets and full recycling. It's part of the Greener Camping Club Association; customers that are currently non-members can sign up when booking and a tree will be planted for you, as well as giving you access to over 150 other GCC sites.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I am glad to see the list of what you liked, -Peace and quiet -Big individual pitches -Picnic benches and fire pits -The honesty shop All of which are great to hear and the reason guests comeback time after time. As to your Dislikes, I will answer them below, however I am glad others will be able to read for themselves my regularity and reliability with constant 10-10 high reviews. You stated - "shower and toilets often dirty and showers blocked" As anyone can see from my reviews, cleanliness is always marked very good. I check and clean the above areas a number of times a day and guests often leave comments as to how nice and clean everything is, so I do not accept your incorrect comments. "stuff that xcampers accidentally left behind not cleared all week" Yes, there was a bag of plastic cups and plates and cutlery left in communal kitchen area, and when I checked the bag daily, items were being removed and replaced during the week, therefore, I was under the impression a guest was still using the items, hence why it was not removed by myself at the time of your stay. "one shower leaked the whole week" Yes there was a constant drip from a shower head and due to a valve in the electric shower unit that was letting water. The unit was still under warranty following a shower upgrade and recent refit and was thus awaiting a service engineer to replace the valve. The visit was booked as a matter of urgency. I apologise the engineer did not arrive during your stay as planed, however Instead of closing the shower and putting it out of order, I made the decision to leave it open as it was still in working order and I didn't want to disappoint anyone by closing a shower. Finally - I don't quite understand why you also marked the following so low - your accommodation, seeing you brought along your own tent! - facilities /activities, there were leaflets available on trips and activities off site, apologies I do not run any activities on site, perhaps researching more before booking future camping trips may assist you.

Fox camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Clean and quiet, Micheal the host was friendly approachable and organised- I felt if I had a query or question he would do his best to answer or resolve. The pod was well equipped with essential items - everything felt it was thought about and was ready for us to just sit back and enjoy. Really lovely experience thank you for a great weekend:)

Disliked: Perhaps more phone charging boxes as x2 for all the campers didn’t seem enough - or state to bring personal mobile charging banks?

Local attractions

The famed former home of famed Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, The Boathouse, is under 10 minutes' drive from the site. There are spectacular views of the Taf estuary from here (Thomas's first poem after moving in was on the view from his writing shed), and you should be able to see local species like seals and oystercatchers as well as herons and egrets. From The Boathouse (have a sturdy bite to eat in the tearoom first), set off on the mighty Wales Coast Path, the 870-mile route from Chepstow in Monmouthshire north to Queensferry in Flintshire. This is some spectacular scenery (hailed by travel boffins as the best coastal landscape in Britain), so aim to hike as much as you can manage; the Carmarthenshire section is 68 miles and includes the 2,470 acres of the Millennium Coastal Park overlooking the Gower peninsula. A couple of castles are within easy reach (Laugharne is 10 minutes' drive away and Llansteffan 25), but for a day out with a difference drive the 15 minutes to Pendine Sands, home of the splendid Museum of Speed.
