If you could conjure up a vision of a perfect Scottish hideaway, it might just look a bit like this: hugging the banks of a river bursting with salmon, and encircled by verdant hills - a bucolic idyll in a region that offers fantastic walking, cycling and golfing opportunities, yet only a short drive from some fascinating towns and cities.
Balgair Castle Holiday Park has great facilities, including a brand new outdoor pool, on-site bistro and weekend entertainment in the summer season.
Nearby attractions and activities
Within easy walking distance are two snug village pubs, a leisure centre with squash courts and indoor bowling, and the luxurious Culcreuch Castle Hotel, a converted castle with lovely grounds that would be perfect for afternoon tea or an evening treat. The neighbouring village of Kippin also has a couple of good pubs, as well as a colourful history for visitors to explore.
As well as the natural attractions of nearby Loch Lomond, the Trossachs and the watery wonders of the Flanders Moss nature reserve, the area is crammed with interesting sights. Top of the list should be the historic city of Stirling, with its dramatic castle and iconic Wallace Monument, as well as some brilliant shopping: the Old Arcade offers independent boutiques and beautiful Victorian architecture, and the more recent Thistles centre has a whopping 90 stores.
The Falkirk Wheel, a unique rotating boat lift that can carry eight boats at a time, is also well worth a visit, and no trip to Scotland would be complete without a tasting at a whisky distillery - close to Balgair you’ll find one of the prettiest in Scotland, the Glengoyne Distillery.
This region of Scotland has an abundance of heritage properties and history to explore. Follow in the footsteps of Mary, Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie at Callendar House in Falkirk, see the battlefield where Bobby the Bruce routed the English at the Bannockburn Heritage Centre, be uplifted by the medieval splendor of Dunblane Cathedral or explore the Trossachs and the real story of their most famous son at the Rob Roy Visitor Centre.
There’s no shortage of things to occupy the wee folk either, with activities from ten-pin bowling to horse riding on offer nearby, plus popular attractions such as the Blair Drummond Safari Park (driving and boat safaris, fairground rides, pedal boats and giant slides), or Briarlands Farm, which offers good old-fashioned country fun, including pick your own. The whole family will enjoy Mugdock Country Park, where there are loads of outdoorsy activities to try, as well as lovely grounds, craft, garden and gift shops, and regular events ranging from art exhibitions to treasure hunts.
