Grab yourself a boy’s - or girl’s - own adventure at East Grange Wigwams in Moray, where you can rollick around the Scottish countryside on quad bikes and dirt karts, or play cowboys and Indians with some archery and shooting practice, before rustling up a ribsticking feast on the campfire and bedding down for the night in your very own wigwam. Huzzah!
While they certainly look like the real deal, the wooden wigwams at this activity centre have all mod cons including comfy beds (bring your own sleeping bags), heating, electricity, a fridge and a kettle, plus access to a communal “bothy” (a fully-equipped cooking and dining area). Traditional camping pitches are also available.
There’s a swashbuckling selection of activities on offer: you could come home boasting that you’ve braved Scotland’s longest zip wire, conquered the nearby white water rapids, or even walked on water (no one needs know that it was in an inflatable ball...). There’s also trout fishing, laser tag and more.
If your companions have had enough of your campfire croonings, round them up for a night of fun at the site’s Loft Bar and Bistro - it’s one of the best venues for live acts in the region, graced by the likes of Paolo Nutini, Idlewild and the Saw Doctors, as well as several top names in stand-up comedy. The downstairs bistro does scrummy traditional Scottish farmhouse grub, washed down with award-winning wines and local ale - and we’re told that the Sunday lunch is to die for.
Nearby attractions and activities
Those who want to continue in the boy’s own vein can stage their own mock battles at Culloden; the battlefield and a fascinating visitor centre are half an hour’s drive from East Grange Wigwams. History buffs will also find plenty of castles and moody standing stones to clamber around.
Moray’s mild climate (for Scotland, anyway) and low average rainfall mean there’s a good chance of making the most of the fabulous golf courses, sailing, sandy beaches, forest trails and awesome mountains - you can even take to the slopes during the ski season.
Amber nectar aficionados will also be interested in making the rounds of the renowned whisky distilleries nearby: everyone’s heard of Glenmorangie, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, all easily do-able from East Grange Wigwams, but with half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries located in the Speyside area of Moray, there’s no shortage of options, including two beauties less than four miles away in the town of Forres.
