Dreaming of rolling hills and golden beaches, with the fringe benefits of close proximity to Edinburgh? Then feast your eyeballs on award-winning Thurston Manor, a former country estate near Dunbar in East Lothian.
The temptations are not limited to the charming backdrop of the Lammermuir Hills: there’s the lure of fly fishing on the site’s beautiful freshwater lake, or of luxuriating in the heated pool, sauna and steam room, plus a well-equipped fitness centre and wonderful wildlife and walks in the surrounding woods.
Thurston Manor also has a shop, lounge bar and restaurant, and a good children’s play area.
Nearby attractions and activities
You won’t find yourselves thirsting for action at Thurston Manor; there are lots of inspiring places to visit in East Lothian, Berwickshire and beyond.
Peer at the puffins and gawk at the gannets at the Scottish Seabird Centre - you can zoom in on the nesting colonies on the islands (including Bass Rock, home to a gobsmacking 150,000 gannets) using the Centre’s interactive live cameras, or zoom off on a boat trip to see them in the flesh/feathers, along with grey seals and dolphins, if you’re lucky.
For more fresh air fun, there are clifftop walks, castle ruins, picnicking and pony trekking across the grassland, woods and salt marshes at John Muir Country Park in nearby Dunbar. Or you could go for a clamber around Tantallon Castle, a majestic fourteenth century stronghold in a photogenic location atop the cliffs overlooking the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock. Not to mention the magnificent golf courses, fishing, horse riding, yachting and water sports in the surrounding area.
Whisky-lovers will definitely want to make a pilgrimage to the nearby Glenkinchie Distillery, which has an excellent visitor centre and guided tours as well as tastings (and a discount in the shop is included in the very reasonable entrance fee).
Last but not least, the brilliant and bonny city of Edinburgh is only 25 miles away...

Avoid Pitch-Up Joseph S. (Mature couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: Nothing at all about the Pitch Up booking system Disliked: Unable to use site booking because of the inflexible Pitch Up booking system - booked on-line then, within seconds, realised wrong date had been entered, but discovered booking once made cannot be altered at all nor a refund made of deposit paid. |

Liked: It's a nice clean site with excellent facilities in pristine condition. Nice walks locally and Dunbar, and the seafront, close at hand. Disliked: I can't think of anything negative about the site. |

Liked: Super pitch with hardstanding with lots of space around. Disliked: Hard standing (gravel) for awning made pegging out awning very difficult. Definitely would recommend steel pegs as all super pitches are totally hard standing. |

Liked: On arrival at check in the staff were very friendly, the site looked clean and well presented and the pitches were a fair size. Disliked: There was not much going in for our two older children... The eight year old loved just playing on the park. But the swimming pool is fairly small and not much of an arcade. |

2nd visit and enjoyed it Trevor M. (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: this is the Second visit we made with 2 kids and our tent, we were more prepared this time which made it a great stay away, these items were a proper hammer as putting the tent pegs in can be a problem, and second a bucket for carrying the crockery for washing Disliked: there are only a few areas where there is shelter from strong winds and it is pot luck whether you get it or not, it may be better asking for a sheltered area as there was a windy day which broke a few tent poles |
