  • Luxury ensuite self-catering pods overlooking Loch Shin
  • On the North Coast 500 driving route, five miles from Lairg
  • Dark sky area for stargazing and glimpses of the Northern Lights
Wild swimming, clifftop hikes, mountain bike trails, canoe outings, munro bagging, Northern Lights spotting… it’s like a greatest hits parade of fresh-air activities in this part of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands. Add in a spectacular view over Loch Shin and a prime position close to the North Coast 500 scenic driving route and you may well be keen to settle in at Loch Shin Luxury Pods for quite some time. So that’s outdoors time sorted, but what of the indoors? It’s likely to be a huge thumbs up on that front too, for (as the name suggests), these are rather swish wooden constructions that are fully insulated, heated and kitted out with an electrical supply, a kitchenette and an ensuite bathroom. Each pod also has a patio and picnic table out front (top spot for admiring the view of loch and mountains); barbecues can be hired for open-air cookery. It’s worth investing in a bucket of logs for the fire pit too (available on site) – get a blaze going and it’ll keep you toasty as you snuggle in and turns gazes skywards for grand displays of stars in the dark skies (or possibly even a glimpse of the Northern Lights if you’re lucky). The nearest village to the site is Lairg, five miles away – head down here to stock up on eats and drinks for the fridge, dine in the pub or eat fish and chips while looking out over the loch.

Local attractions

There are plenty of places nearby to give hiking boots and bikes a workout. The Falls of Shin (20 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start, for forest walks and spying on the salmon leaping upstream. More intrepid types may like to dive into Loch Shin for a swim, climb Ben More Assynt (40 minutes) or take mountain bikes to the trails around Big Burn (35 minutes). To slow the pace down a tad, take a wander around the flamboyant house and gardens at Dunrobin Castle (35 minutes) or grab binoculars and settle into the Dalchork wildlife hide (two miles from the site) to see if you can spot the sea eagles, pine martens, red deer and other beasties that roam around this area. And after all that… what goes well with an evening of watching the sun go down over the loch? Why, whisky of course – pick yourself up a bottle to sip after a tour at the Glenmorangie distillery (40 minutes) or Balblair (35 minutes), setting for big-screen flick The Angels’ Share.
