  • Coastal location 400 metres from spectacular Tralee Bay beach
  • On a seven-acre croft eight miles from Oban and the island ferry
  • Boat slipway, putting green, fly fishing and chippy within half a mile
Well now, this is a pretty spectacular spot. Highfield Holidays is a seven-acre croft about eight miles from Oban on Scotland's west coast, in a peaceful rural setting within five minutes' walk of a sandy beach. The site is by the sea with views to forests and hills, surrounded by mountains, lochs, crofts and beaches… seriously, this is a pretty spectacular spot. It's 400 metres from the croft's main gate to Tralee Bay beach (and only 200 metres to a restaurant and the Tralee Bay fish and chip shop), 10 minutes' drive to Forestry Commission marked hiking trails, and 15 to Oban and the ferry to other Highlands isles. The site has a modern shower and toilet block with four bathrooms, each with its own shower, basin and toilet, plus three additional toilet cubicles and a disabled/family toilet and shower room with baby changing facilities. Guests can use the boat slipway, putting green and fly fishing area of the local lodge park, half a mile away. A café and village shop are also half a mile away; pubs and restaurants are within three miles.

Local attractions

Being this close to the coast, it’s a given that your first outing (weather permitting) should be to toddle off to Tralee beach for a breath of salty sea air. It’ll only take you a few minutes to wander down there for a smashing stroll through the sand dunes and shingle. There’s a play park down there for the nippers and a café for a warming cup of hot choc if it’s a tad breezy. Intrepid types can plunge deep beneath the surface here to dive the wreck of the SS Breda, a cargo ship bombed in 1940; have a word with one of the dive centres in Oban (15 minutes’ drive away) to set up scuba adventures. While you’re in Oban you can read a bit more about the area’s wartime history at the Oban War & Peace Museum and raise a toast to a calmer future with a dram at the Oban Distillery. When you’re done with town time, make for Dunstaffnage Castle (15 minutes’ drive), a ruined waterside castle with some cracking sea views. You’ll get heaps of sea views on a Sealife Adventures boat trip round the Firth of Lorne (40 minutes) too – and with any luck, you’ll also be treated to sightings of dolphins, seals and basking sharks.
