  • Small and peaceful family-run site on Kerry's Beara peninsula
  • Derreen Gardens, Lake Glenmore and Healy Pass within 10 minutes' drive
  • On-site kitchen with oven and fridge; a 10-minute drive from the pub
It's worth going way out west for this gem of the Emerald Isle. And in fact you can’t actually go much further west: Creveen Lodge Caravan and Camping Park is on the Beara peninsula, a 48-kilometre-long jetty of Kerry (and a bit of Cork) pointing into the Atlantic: next stop, Canada. Wild this part of Ireland may be (it’s the bottom end of the 2500-kilometre Wild Atlantic Way route), but the family team at Creveen Lodge offers a civilised base for your scenic stays. Amenities include a communal kitchen, with hob, oven, fridge freezer and microwave; you can cosy up there watching TV by the fire too when the weather suggests it. There’s a café (with bike hire, what a brill combo…) five minutes’ drive away in Lauragh; it’s 10 minutes to the pubs in Bunaw and half an hour to supermarkets in the Beara’s unofficial capital of Castletownbere. For a quick intro to the area, stop for a cuppa in seaside Lauragh, hire a bike and pedal off round the coast to Derreen Gardens, where paths lead through 60 acres of gardens full of subtropical plants and down towards the sea with grand views of the Caha mountains. If you head the other way out of Lauragh, it’s a 20-minute ride to the 3,000-year-old Cashelkeelty Stone Circle (15 minutes by car from the site).

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The stunning scenery and fabulous location. Friendly and accommodating people. We changed our booking arrangements 3 times and Mary was very understanding and relaxed about it.

Disliked: The loose dogs roaming freely were a bit of a worry with my own dog. It was very very dark on arrival late at night, but I can understand that they don’t want light pollution in such a beautiful location.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and re the dogs. They are farm dogs and no one around here keeps farm dogs locked up as it is not the correct way to treat them. We share our home with the campers and have spots away from the dwelling house where people can camp and be by themselves. You arrived at 10.30 at night when everyone was in bed so there was no need for lots of lights on as we are in war time and have to conserve energy. You were gone at 10.30 in the morning so it was a flying visit. I did my best to accommodate you and changed the booking so I did my best as I do for everyone .

From the manager: In response to your review I cannot understand how you could not flush the toilets as they are new and we never have any problem with them. Re cleanliness we clean the the toilet block a few times every day and do our best to keep everything in order. There are notices up in the toilets to let us know of any problems so that it can be rectified. Re the wifi it is in the upper half of the campsite and works very well. We just have a signal as there is no broadband in this area.

Electric optional grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very nice low key site and though on a hill there were lots of flat pitch nooks and crannies to camp as well as a couple of fields below. We found a pitch with electric in the front field with beautiful views NW over the bay. Pitches were large and there was plenty of space for kids to play games. And, site allows fires with plenty of fire pits around. Mary was a good host and had fantastic recommendations for the area, horseshoe hike around Rabach Way was fantastic but hard. Only one toilet / shower block but we did not find queues for the shower and they were always clean and well stocked. Shower on tokened timer - always stressful - but sufficient given to give yourself a scrub. We would recommend Creveen for a laid back camp in one of the most beautiful peninsulas on the West Coast.

Disliked: Occasional waft of smell from the septic tank on the site.

From the manager: Thank you very much for your review and happy you enjoyed the area and the walks around here.

Local attractions

Beara remains a bit of a secret, a frontier land of deserted beaches, colourful fishing villages and ancient stone circles underneath the hefty Caha mountains. Get stuck in with a 10-minute drive to Glenmore Lake, a fine fishing spot surrounded by walking trails, where you’ll only be disturbed by the odd wild deer. To see the whole peninsula and beyond, drive past the lake to Healy Pass; stop at the 330-metre summit to see one of the finest views in the west stretching to the high mountain ranges of Co Kerry. To feel you’ve earned the view rather than just driven to it, walking paths up Mount Knockatee start 20 minutes from the site. If all that sea’s got your maritime spirits a-rising, try diving in Lauragh and kayaking and sea safaris to the seal colonies from Kenmare, half an hour away. If you’re more into walking by the waters, join the 200-kilometre Beara Way in Lauragh, a clearly signed and mostly coastal trail beginning and ending in the Gulf Stream-warmed village of Glengarriff (40 minutes). For those wanting to wander west until the land’s run out, there’s a treat at the tip of the Beara: an hour’s drive to Ballaghboy ends up by a cable car. Take the giddying 10-minute trip across open ocean to Dursey Island for the wildest and westest walking you can do.
