  • Cosy glamping pods in the Mourne Mountains foothills of County Down
  • A 10-minute drive to Kilbroney Park; the Cloughmore Stone 15 minutes
  • Family-friendly outdoor activities; pubs and shop five minutes’ drive
Set in the foothills of County Down’s Mourne Mountains, the glamping pods at East Coast Adventure make great little sanctuaries for outdoor experiences or laidback rural breaks. Hikers, cyclists, families and friends – bring the dog too – can base themselves here for splendid days of outdoor fun in Kilbroney Forest Park and at stunning Carlingford Lough, or potter around the leafy rural site doing nothing very much at all. Each prettily painted wooden pod sleeps up to four people. They are waterproof and cosy – and stay that way all year round. Inside there are double and single camp beds for sleeping up to four guests, a plug heater and electric power. All you need to bring is bedding or sleeping bags, food and toiletries. Outside, each pod has its own sheltered decking, seating area and firepit. Communal facilities on site include a shared shower and toilet pod, a barbecue pod warmed with a woodburning stove – just the job for family get-togethers if the weather’s not playing ball – and an outdoor kitchen hut with all the basics to rustle up simple meals. From the site, it’s five minutes’ drive to the cute loughside village of Rostrevor for a basics shop and a smattering of takeaways, pubs and cafés.

Local attractions

A stay at East Coast Adventure gives you access to a whole range of activities that can be arranged on site, from kayaking in Carlingford Lough to guided walks to watch the sun rise over the Irish Sea and biking the challenging trails from the Rostrevor Mountain Bike Centre. There are easy family walks in gorgeous landscaped Kilbroney Park (10 minutes’ drive), with its expansive parklands and arboretum planted with rare trees. A forest trail leads up to the famous Cloughmore Stone (15 minutes), a gigantic erratic boulder deposited thousands of years ago during the last Ice Age, and an observation point with spectacular lough views at Kodak Corner, a five-minute walk from the boulder. More testing yomps are found in the Mourne Mountains foothills (15 minutes), where you can climb up to the Mourne Wall – a 22-mile continuous section of dry-stone wall scaling the summit of the hills – or take a picnic to eat by the reservoir in Silent Valley Mountain Park (both half an hour).
